MOST young cattle categories continued to be challenged in c/kg price in AuctionsPlus trading on Friday. Seven of the ten weight categories declined in c/kg value, with heifers most impacted.

Heifer offerings continued to outweigh the steer offerings among young cattle. There were just over 7900 heifers offered on AuctionsPlus on Friday versus 7270 steers.

That’s despite a particularly large offering of heavy feeder steers +400kg, numbering 1900.

Those heavy steers lost 2c/kg in value on the previous week, averaging 555c/kg, and ranging from 482c to 600c.

Steers 330-400kg went against the trend, adding 17c to average value to average 566c, but clearing only 64pc of the 1711 head offered.

Mediumweight steers 280-330kg lost 19c to average 546c, while clearing 64pc of the 1711 offered.

Among steer highlights, 75 Angus and Angus x Hereford steers 12-13 months averaging 272kg from Walcha, NSW returned 615c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Ebor, NSW.

Out of Armidale, NSW 98 Angus backgrounder steers 263kg at 13-15 months made 618c/kg.

NSW drought cattle still exiting Qld

Among larger offerings sold last week, 222 Angus and Angus x Santa yearling steers 11-15 months from Winton, Western Queensland sold from 542c/kg for the heavier end (96 Angus x Santas) averaging 290kg, to 601c/kg for the remaining 126 Angus types 266kg. Originally bred in the Bingara/Barraba district of northern NSW, they were shifted north to agistment near Winton in early April. They were joined by 139 of their Angus heifer sisters 260kg at 11-15 months, which sold on Friday for 431c/kg.

It was a similar story for 240 Angus steers and heifers sold out of the Longreach area of Queensland on Friday, having been purchased as weaners out of rapidly drying areas of NSW in late 2025 and early 2026. The heifer portion 298kg at 10-15 months made 500c/kg, while the steers 324kg 12-24 months averaging 386kg made 570c.

Overall cattle listings rose 6pc on AuctionsPlus last week to 18,616 head, while clearance fell sharply to 54pc, down 34 percentage points week-on-week.

Heifer prices softened across most weight ranges. The 200-280kg category averaged 477c/kg (down 21c) to average 477c, clearing 63pc of the 2114 offered, while 280-330kg heifers averaged 490c/kg (down 42c), clearing 57pc of the 2237 offered. Heifers heavier than 400kg held firm at 513c/kg, clearing only 42pc of the 715 head offering.

From Weilmoringle, NSW, 81 Angus heifers 12-22 months averaging 385kg made 488c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Tamworth, NSW.

Breeding females

Breeding female results were mostly cheaper than the previous week.

Among larger offerings, NSM cows & calves produced an offering of 1100 pairs, but delivered a clearance of only 36pc, while prices fell $200/pair on the previous week.

NSM heifers and calves offered 747 pairs, clearing only 30pc of the offering, with prices down $30 to average $3190. The only category to go against the price trend was SM Cows & Calves (only 241 offered) lifting $881 to average $2975/pair with an 84pc clearance rate. PTIC cows cleared just 6pc of the small offering of 247 head, averaging $2650, while 433 PTIC heifers cleared 31pc, losing $80 to average $1756.

From Everton, NSW, 20 Angus non-station mated heifers & calves 24-26 months averaging 553kg returned $3620/pair and will travel to a buyer near Wodonga, VIC.

NSW dominated supply last week with 9746 head (up 14pc), followed by Queensland with 6038 head (down 16pc). Victoria contributed 1389 head (up 49pc) and Tasmania 658 head (up 28pc).
