
Yarding 3700 Change +440
Following the Easter holiday break, the numbers lifted and the market reflected a yarding mainly comprising of store cattle yet included some excellent trade and heavy export cattle.
The usual buyers participated, but there was noticeably less demand in the feedlot and restocking categories.
While the market lacked the intensity observed two weeks prior, there were a few impressive sales for feeder types.
Lightweight steers weighing between 200-280 kg experienced a decline of 35c, averaging $1,227. In contrast, the heifer portion averaged $928/head. Feeder steers in the lighter weight category of 330-400kg saw strong demand, resulting in a price increase of 15c, with prices ranging from 470-536c/kg. However, medium-weight feeder steers faced fluctuating competition and slipped by 14c, selling between 456-512c/kg. Medium-weight feeder heifers eased by 11c with sales between 410 -474c/kg. The trade cattle 400-500kg saw an increase in numbers, and the quality was notably very good, with some grain-assisted. Trade steers and heifers sold within the range of 427-520c/kg
Heavy export numbers also rose, and was driven by increased competition, particularly due to the step up in quality compared to the previous sale. Heavy steers and bullocks commanded prices between 445-499c/kg. Heavy cows experienced fluctuating competition, resulting in prices that remained firm to slightly higher, averaging 381c/kg. Cows weighing under 520 kg faced weaker demand, with prices slipping by 10c particularly for the better-covered types, which sold between 330-365c/kg.
