Steer prices lift in smaller 13,562 head online offering

These 83 Wagyu x Angus steers 8-9 months averaging 187kg from Ebor, northern NSW returned 886c/kg or $1660 on Friday and destined to travel to a buyer near Maules Creek, NSW. A further 103 of their heifer sisters averaging 180kg made 850c/kg.

 

OFFERINGS fell 18 percent on AuctionsPlus this week, reaching 13,562 head, with clearances down 10pc to 81pc.

All five steer weight categories showed price advances yesterday in c/kg terms, changing direction in the previous week, while heifer categories mostly retracted in value.

Local buying out of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania was historically strong, holding above a rate of 84pc over the past four weeks.

Wagyu young cattle lines have recently started to re-emerge on A+, with 307 head offered in this week’s weaner and yearling sale in four lots, on top of 180 the week before, and 519 back on 12 June. We’ll look into the reasons for that re-emergence in a separate article next week.

Following the recent trend, heavier feeder steers +400kg on Friday averaged 575c, up another 39c, on a 75pc clearance. The offering of 596 head in the category included 432 or 73pc described as Angus or Angus cross.

Among larger steer offerings, 1600 steers 280-330kg cleared 84pc to average 591c, up 5c on last week, while 1472 steers 200-280kg cleared 88pc, averaging 631c, up 13c week-on-week.

1340 steers 330-400kg cleared 92pc to average 592c, up17c, while light steers less than 200kg cleared 88pc of a smaller offering of 680 head, with prices lifting 55c to average 709c.

From Cooma, NSW, 126 Angus steers 8-9 months averaging 186kg returned 808c/kg, travelling to a buyer near Maffra, VIC.

Heifers mostly trended downwards in price this week. Heavier heifer lines softened, with +400kg heifers back 40c to average 483c, clearing 85pc of the 222 offered. Heifers 330-400kg lost 4c to average 497c, but cleared 92pc of the offering of 876. Largest categories were heifers 200–280kg (1600 offered, clearing 95pc) and 280-330kg (1200 offered, clearing 92pc.) The 280-330kg category lifted 12c to average 534c, while the lighter category lost 20c to average 539c.

Larger heifer lines offered this week included 180 Grey Brahman NSM future breeders 320kg at 16-26 months off Hatfield Station via Katherine NT, making 406c/kg or $1300, and 104 heavier sisters 382kg making 387c/kg or $1480.

Breeding females

Breeding females accounted for 3432 head offered, but produced a clearance of only 54pc.

Results were mixed. The biggest offering was for PTIC cows, clearing only 53pc of an offering of 1086 head, with prices $141 lighter averaging $2470. PTIC heifers attracted an offering of 741 head, but cleared only 20pc, with prices $104 better at $2311.

Station-mated cows offered 649 head, clearing 71pc, with prices up $143 to average $2338. Most other categories were too small to quote.

A line of 53 Shorthorn non-station mated cows & calves, cows 26-30 months averaging 366kg from Walcha, NSW, returned $2940/pair and will travel to a buyer in Armidale, NSW.
