Roma sale 14 Apr 2026: Dry pushing southern cattle north

While this week’s sale saw a cooler morning as the temperatures dropped at the Roma Saleyards, cattle numbers were on the rise with an increase of over 2500 head recorded on the previous week’s Tuesday sale.

The regular buyers, feedlotters and backgrounders were in attendance and competing for over 6,400 head of cattle, with the quality and selection of them.

Across the Sunshine State, cattle were drawn from the western regions of Blackall, Morven, Quilpie, Tambo and Windorah, as well as from Dulacca, Condamine, Hannaford, Meandarra and Miles in the east.

Within the Maranoa supply district, consignments were sourced from Injune, Mitchell, Roma, Surat and Yuleba, and from the southern areas of Queensland cattle came from Bollon, Dirranbandi and St George.

On par with previous weeks’ sales, cattle travelled up from further south to go under the hammer, with this week once again seeing cattle consigned from Coonamble in New South Wales.

 

M.F. Gadsby of ‘Rocky Hills’, Morven, offloaded a pen of Angus steers which fetched 486c/kg, weighing in at 321kg and receiving a return of $1,560/hd.

The line was consigned through Ray White Rural Roma.

FG & R Dunn’s steers.

FG & R Dunn sold two pens of Santa Gertrudis cross steers and one pen of Angus cross steers at this week’s sale, with the three pens selling to 540c/kg.

Operating out of ‘Megine’, Roma, the heaviest pen of the Santa Gertrudis cross steers weighed in at 304kg and made $1,645/hd.

The pen of Angus cross steers weighed 266kg and returned $1,439/hd.

The lines were consigned through Grant Daniel and Long Roma.

DC Diamond Past Co’s steers.

DC Diamond Past Co, based out of ‘Mirri Mirri’, Hannaford, offloaded steers to 520c/kg, averaging 264kg and making $1,375/hd.

Two pens of Angus cross steers sold to 514c/kg, with the heaviest pen of the two weighing in at 277kg and returning $1,426/hd.

One pen of Charolais cross steers fetched 536c/kg to weigh 288kg and receive $1,544/hd.

DC Diamond Past Co also sold heifers at this week’s sale, with two pens of Angus cross heifers selling to 398c/kg.

The heaviest pen of the two pens of Angus cross heifers weighed 269kg and received a return of $1,074/hd.

Alcurah Creek Grazing’s steers.

Alcurah Creek Grazing sold steers to 503c/kg, weighing an average of 304kg and making $1,530/hd.

Hailing from of ‘Alcurah Creek’, Roma, one pen of Charolais cross steers fetched 516c/kg, weighing in at 289kg and receiving a return of $1,494/hd.

Alcurah Creek Grazing also offloaded heifers at this week’s sale, selling to 381c/kg to weigh 289kg and make $1,106/hd.

One pen of Charolais cross heifers fetched 394c/kg, averaging 308kg and receiving a return of $1,214/hd.

NLRS Commentary:

With an increase in numbers Roma Agents yarded 6473 head. Cattle were drawn from NSW and the regular supply district. Some cattle were showing signs of the dry conditions especially from the south. All of the regular buyers attending and regulated their support on quality presented.

Yearling steers under 200kg topped 548c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg sold to 540c to restockers and 520c/kg to Lot feeders. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg made to 540c to average 487c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg held firm to make to 506c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg sold from 325c to 462c restockers and 478c/kg to Lot Feeders. Yearling steers over 480kg to 408c/kg to Lot Feeders.

Yearling heifers under 200kg topped 342c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold from 250c to 402c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg made 424c to average 349c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg sold from 320c to 420c/kg to Lot Feeders. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg made from 336c to 360c/kg to Lot Feeders. Yearling heifers over 480kg to 378c/kg to processors.

Grown steers 400 to 500kg went against the trend and made from 440c to 456c to Lot Feeders and 478c/kg to restockers. Grown steers 500 to 600kg sold from 352c to 448c/kg to processors. Bullocks over 600kg to 410c/kg to processors. Heifers over 540kg to 392c/kg to processors.

A good run of cows penned. The 3 score cows over 520kg sold to 366c/kg with a pen of heifers and mixed cows to 392/kg to processors. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg made from 200c to 320c/kg to processors. Bulls 450 to 600kg to 374c/kg. Bulls over 600kg to 405c/kg to processors.

A total of 6476 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 548c/kg and averaged 479c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 540c/kg and averaged 477c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 540c/kg and averaged 468c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 506c/kg and averaged 447c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 478c/kg and averaged 424c/kg.

P & S English Contracting Pty Ltd, Anchorage, St George sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 548c/kg, reaching a top of $1,285 to average $1,136.

D & J Pobar, Charlton Bank, Roma sold Charolais cross steers to 536c/kg, reaching a top of $1,386 to average $1,238.

DC Diamond Pastoral Co, Mirri Mirri, Hannaford sold Charolais cross steers to 536c/kg, reaching a top of $1,544 to average $1,375.  The Angus cross heifers sold to 398c/kg, reaching a top of $1,075 to average $1,023.

Callum Crozier, Beverly Hills, Mitchell sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 528c/kg, reaching a top of $1,354 to average $1,320.

Peter & Kate Arthy, Megine, Roma sold Angus cross steers to 526c/kg, reaching a top of $1,481 to average $1,481.

M & F Bidgood, Katoomba, Injune sold Charolais cross heifers to 420c/kg, reaching a top of $1,392 to average $1,118.

DJ & KM Smith, Hammond Downs, Windorah sold Droughtmaster cross heifers to 402c/kg, reaching a top of $1,653 to average $1,052.

Sky Cattle, Bookine, St George sold Angus cross heifers to 368c/kg, reaching a top of $1,968 to average $1,502.

AR & TM Marsh, Hillsborough Station, St George sold Santa Gertrudis cross heifers to 350c/kg, reaching a top of $1,400 to average $1,006.

 

Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 305c/kg and averaged 224c/kg. Cows in the 400-500kg range topped at 338c/kg, averaging 284c/kg. Cows in the 500-600kg range topped at 357c/kg, averaging 316c/kg. Cows over 600kg topped at 366c/kg, averaging 345c/kg.

Yarrawonga Cattle Co, Yarrawonga, Wallumbilla sold Angus cows to 366c/kg, reaching a top of $2,294 to average $2,279.

Crichton Pastoral Pty Ltd, Ivanhoe Downs, Morven sold Santa Gertrudis cross cows to 345c/kg, reaching a top of $2,075 to average $1,982.
