ENTRIES are now being invited for the Angus for Every System Feedlot & Carcase Trial, being staged for the first time on Queensland’s Darling Downs.
Loosely based on the similar southern performance trial hosted each year at Teys Jindalee feedlot and Naracoorte processing facility, the northern Angus trial will also be hosted by Teys at the company’s Condamine feedlot on the Darling Downs.
Designed to deliver performance insights, genetic validation, and industry recognition, the trial will offer a comprehensive platform for producers in the northern half of NSW and Queensland to showcase and improve their herds.
Entries for teams of ten head are now open for the competition, closing 31 July, with delivery and cattle induction 15-16 September. Processing will take place after 120 days on feed on 15 January 2027 for HGP treated cattle and Friday 22 January for non-implanted cattle.
A complete performance picture
Producers participating in the trial will receive regular updates on cattle performance, with daily weight gains measured using Optiweigh units live-streamed through Angus Tech.
“This trial is about transparency and giving producers real-time data to make informed decisions,” Angus Australia business development manager Jake Bourne said.
Post-processing, participants will receive detailed carcase feedback, including MSA grading and eating quality assessments. All animals will be scanned on induction, ensuring accurate benchmarking against industry standards.
“We want producers to see exactly how their cattle stack up and where improvements can be made,” Mr Bourne said.
Driving genetic improvement
Every animal in the trial will undergo genomic testing using SteerSelect, providing predicted traits and breed content data.
“Genomic testing is a game-changer. It allows producers to validate their breeding programs and make decisions that will improve herd performance for years to come,” Mr Bourne said.
Celebrating excellence
The event will recognise top-performing teams across feedlot performance, carcase quality and eating quality, with classes for 100pc, 75pc, and 50pc Angus content providing opportunity for interesting comparisons.
“This is more than a competition; it’s a celebration of the quality and innovation within our industry,” he said.
Entry fees are set at $1000 plus GST, and all entrants will receive complimentary entry of one team of three head to the 2027 AMPC National Beef Carcase Competition at Beef Australia 2027 in Rockhampton.
Industry Impact
The trial’s growing popularity reflects producers’ commitment to objective performance data and genetic improvement, Mr Bourne said.
“Producers are hungry for information that helps them breed better cattle and meet market specifications,” he said. “This trial delivers that in spades.”
