AUSTRALIAN dairy farmers could be in the box seat to capitalise on a looming global shortage of high-quality dairy heifers, with demand growing across a range of international markets.
The Australian Livestock Exporters Council said the opportunity was significant, with markets including Turkey, the Philippines, Mexico, Pakistan, the UAE, Indonesia and Malaysia seeking high-production Holstein replacement heifers.
“The diversification of dairy export markets is a very positive development for Australian producers,” ALEC chief executive Mark Harvey-Sutton said.
The emerging opportunity is already evident internationally, with Australian producers supplying replacement Holstein heifers to Mexico in 2025 as that market struggled to source suitable animals from traditional suppliers like the United States.
Importantly, many of these markets offer relatively straightforward export pathways.

“Australian dairy farmers who continue to breed quality dairy heifers could find themselves in an extremely strong position as international supply tightens,” Mr Harvey-Sutton said.
While live export is a niche segment of Australia’s dairy industry, it offers an important additional market for southern Australian producers.
It’s one of the reasons the dairy industry has been a key contributor to the recent development of the industry’s ten-year Live Cattle Growth Plan which aims to drive commercial growth, regulatory efficiency, stronger trade partnerships, public confidence and continued leadership in animal welfare.
“The emerging demand for dairy heifers is exactly the type of market opportunity the Live Cattle Growth Plan is designed to identify and harness,” Mr Harvey-Sutton said.
“Capitalising on those upcoming opportunities and ensuring supply to meet this expected demand will be an important consideration for the sector in the short to medium term.
“The Australian dairy industry is renowned for producing productive, healthy cattle and our exporters have the experience and relationships to connect those cattle with customers around the world. It’s an exceptionally good news story.”
