Ahead of Frontier Genetics’ fourth annual bull sale on Friday 28 August, featuring an elite lineup of 133 Grey and Red Brahman bulls, sale sponsor Gener8 Reproduction caught up with Frontier Genetics producers to ask a simple but revealing question: what do you now know, and wish you’d known earlier, about genetics?
Our Genetics Journey: Kate Landsberg, Trafalgar Pastoral Company
“What I now know about genetics? The vital role sire selection plays in your business. This seemingly simple decision has a compounding effect on your core breeding herd for generations. A bull contributes more to the genetic progress of a herd than any other animal and not taking the time to carefully select sires can have a long-term impact on the productivity of your business, whether that be positive or negative,” Kate Landsberg, who has overseen the stud and commercial breeder operation there for the past 11 years, said.
Trafalgar Pastoral Company collects data on temperament, fertility and growth, breeding to meet the needs of high-end, grass-fed finishing buyers. Land and cattle-management techniques are constantly innovated at Trafalgar in the family-owned, self-replacing stud and commercial breeding operation. The Red and Grey pure Brahman stud comprises 360 breeders. The Landsberg family has run Trafalgar Pastoral Company since 1913.

Our Genetics Journey: Roland Everingham, Oak Park Brahman Stud
“What I now know about genetics? The power of objective and accurate genetic selection, and how quickly you can see real world (in the paddock) results once true genetic selection is applied. One of the most significant changes in our breeding program was when we made the shift from selecting genetics using raw data to selecting using EBV data. The results were instant and game changing, heavier weaning/turnoff weights, earlier puberty and faster scrotal development all from one cross of performance-based genetics. Since then, we have continued to select using EBV’s as a guide to an animal’s potential and in doing this it has allowed these high-performance genetics to compound and reach new levels of production.
If I had known what kind of genetic/performance improvement was possible when selecting using EBV data I would have jumped at the opportunity when starting out as a stud breeder, it’s something I wish I had realised earlier,” Roland Everingham said.
Oak Park Brahman Stud is based in Far North Queensland on Oak Park Station and consists of 350 registered red and grey Brahman breeders. Their aim is to breed highly productive, highly marketable and highly predictable cattle that thrive in tough northern conditions. Oak Park cattle are bred in the north for the north and put under extreme management pressure to ensure commercial clients reap the rewards.

Our Genetics Journey: Michael & Michelle Lyons, Wambiana Station
“What I now know about genetics? The compounding benefits of having a long-term plan for our genetics and sticking to it. If we do this, then each generation should be better than their parents and take us closer to our genetic goals,” Michael Lyons said.
“Through accessing the services of Gener8 we have used pregnancy testing to identify non-performing breeders, semen testing to identify early puberty bulls and IVF to fast track our genetic progress,” Michelle Lyons said.
The core business for Lyons Family Grazing is producing Brahman bulls that are well adapted to the northern environment, exhibiting excellent fertility, do-ability and growth while requiring low inputs. The Lyons family have been custodians of Wambiana Station since 1912, and Michael and Michelle took over ownership in 2018. Cattle are run across three properties, Wambiana, Day Dawn and Britannia, all in the Dry Tropics region. They embrace cutting-edge technologies, including genotyping, to expedite genetic improvements within their herds.
Frontier Genetics brings together 10 like-minded Queensland seedstock producers with a combined herd of more than 5,000 BREEDPLAN-measured Brahman females.
They offer a single online platform where buyers can compare pasture-prepared bulls from different breeders, regions and environments on a level playing field, backed by a strict code of standards and advice from leading beef cattle geneticists at AGBU.
