This week, veteran agricultural broadcaster Kerry Lonergan joins Beef Central, hosting our brand new industry podcast series called The Weekly Grill. The new podcast series is brought to readers with the support of Elanco Animal Health.
Each week, Kerry will sit down with an industry identity to chew the fat on topical matters across the meat and livestock industry.
Today’s first guest is Queensland red meat processor, lotfeeder and beef producer Terry Nolan, discussing the current challenging conditions faced by meat processors, Australian beef’s global competitiveness, herd rebuilding, the future direction of MSA, the labour challenge, potential for automation in agriculture and other topics.

Well remember working with Terry on the early stages of roll out of MSA in Brisbane when there was strong opposition from most sectors of the beef processing and retailing industry in the 90s. As usual his practical comment on the diminishing return from further research into MSA is pertinent and concentration on research into automation in production, processing and retailing of beef, not plant protein based false meat products are timely.

Amazing to listen to an insightful leader in our industry. I didn’t know the history of Nolans and how the family patriarchs influence has had and continues to have in Nolans.
Keys points of interest from the podcast –
. Environment credentials of MEAT
. Holistic cost in making and selling a kilo of Beef/Meat
. Innovation/robotics and the part they must play in the future in Beef/Meat production
Great interview Kerry, thank you
This program is a great addition to the Beef Central overall program. I enjoyed listening to Terry’s comments and overall view from his perspective.
I look forward to listening to future podcasts.
