Two dry seasons have put maternal efficiency under the microscope at Chalambra in Victoria’s Western District. Simon and Alex Menzel say their Speckle Park cows needed around 20pc less feed than their Angus-based females, held condition better and achieved about 95pc conception through the dry. Their experience, alongside commercial results across other systems, is building a wider case for Speckle Park as a complementary crossbreeding option.
The most expensive cow in a breeding herd is not always the one that looks like a poor performer. Sometimes it is the cow that needs more feed to hold condition, struggles to rejoin when the season tightens, or leaves the herd before repaying her replacement cost.
At Chalambra, south of Hamilton in Victoria’s Western District, Simon and Alex Menzel have been testing that equation. Over the two driest seasons the property has recorded, their Speckle Park and Angus-based females have run under the same paddock conditions, seasonal pressure and feed budget.
The comparison shifted the focus from cow weight to maintenance cost, reproductive reliability and productive life.
Across British-breed, dairy and Bos indicus-influenced females, producers are using Speckle Park genetics to pursue maternal efficiency, carcase performance and market-suited progeny. Speckle Park International (SPI) is connecting these observations with processor feedback, performance data and its Commercial Register.
The feed bill starts with the cow
Simon runs the 800-hectare property with his wife Kylie and son Alex, who manages the cattle and grazing operation.
Chalambra is productive but partly flood-prone, making flexibility important. Breeder numbers sit at around 350 head, including 120 Angus cows joined to Speckle Park bulls to produce replacements. The long-term goal is a self-replacing Speckle Park herd of 500 to 600 breeders, with trade heifers used to adjust numbers.
“Everyone worries about stocking rate. No one worries about carrying capacity,” Alex said.
“Match stocking rate to carrying capacity – number one rule.”
After returning home six years ago, Alex shifted the business from trading back towards breeding. He wanted a moderate, deep-bodied and functional female rather than the leaner, ranging type he had been seeing. Speckle Park offered that structure but still had to prove itself beside the Angus-based herd.
Based on feed use and herd observations, the Menzels estimate their Speckle Park cows required around 20pc less feed while holding more condition. Conception was about 95pc in the Speckle Park herd compared with roughly 90pc in the Angus-based cows. When conditions improved, the Speckle Park females recovered from condition score 2 to about 3.5 within three to four weeks. For a self-replacing herd, a female that maintains herself, returns to calf and raises a strong calf without extra inputs protects future production.
Earlier this year, Alex placed Speckle Park cows in some of the property’s toughest paddocks.
“They just put their heads down and powered through it,” he said.
He observed the Angus cows were more inclined to back away and graze less aggressively, while the Speckle Park females kept using the paddock and holding together. These are on-farm observations rather than a controlled trial, but they inform feeding and stocking decisions.
One poor result, one lasting lesson
The Menzels’ confidence was not there at the start. Their first Speckle Park program almost ended when only one of 60 Angus cows went in calf. Rather than dismissing the breed, Simon and Alex reviewed the result and concluded the bulls had not suited their females, country or commercial goals. They sought advice from established breeders experienced with both Speckle Park and Angus cattle. The following year, Chalambra changed its bull-buying approach and rebuilt the program around better-matched sires.
Their advice is direct: do the homework before mating, not after. Hybrid vigour does not replace sound selection. Calving ease, mature size, fertility, structure, growth and carcase traits must suit the females, environment and market.
What is another calving year worth?
Chalambra culls hard on feet, temperament and the alignment through the pins, thurl and hip that can indicate calving-ease risk. The remaining herd must look after itself and be straightforward to handle. Simon sees longevity as central to cow value: a female calving for 12 to 15 years needs fewer replacements and produces more calves than one culled early for extra frame.
The system is grass-based, with no grain. Grazing is time-controlled across multi-species pastures, while hay, silage and cattle numbers respond to seasonal need. Alex believes repeatedly buying feed to cover a shortfall can indicate the system is out of balance.
“That starts a chain reaction that gets very expensive,” he said.
On a separate calculation, the Menzels estimate production costs for the Speckle Park herd are around 20pc below the Angus-based herd. The difference is material and has been achieved without extra inputs.
Can the opportunity travel north?
Tamworth livestock consultant and stock agent Andrew Hosken sees clear scope for Speckle Park genetics across a wide range of commercial systems. His view has been shaped by cattle moving through saleyards, feedlots and processors, and includes Speckle Park crossed over Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn and Santa Gertrudis females.
In northern herds, the opportunity is to retain the environmental adaptation of the female base while using a complementary sire to produce progeny suited to domestic feedlot, MSA and eating-quality markets.
“It doesn’t matter what breed you put them over, they do a good job,” Andrew said.
“They really do a very, very good job on improving meat-eating quality and MSA grading.”
His main advice is to start with the market. Not every cross suits every pathway, and some breed-restricted programs and live-export specifications remain highly specific. Where the market fits, Andrew said he is happy to buy 350–420kg mixed-sex Speckle Park-infused cattle, including Speckle Santa, Speckle Hereford and Speckle Shorthorn progeny, for suitable feedlot programs without applying a breed discount.
The decision becomes more complex when replacement daughters are retained because traits that add market value to sale progeny then have to be balanced against the fertility, adaptation and longevity required from daughters in more demanding environments. The opportunity is not a single prescription for northern Australia, but a crossbreeding option to be assessed against country, cow base, market and daughter retention.
The rail closes the loop
Chalambra is still developing the feedlot and finishing relationships that will let more cattle be followed through to detailed carcase feedback. Other commercial programs are already showing how Speckle Park genetics perform beyond the paddock.
In Western Australia, Arley Speckle Park has moved from selling weaners into feeding, processing and direct supply. Across 119 Speckle Park-infused cattle processed year to date in 2026, the operation recorded an average MSA Index of 62.46, with 86pc grading above the national top-quarter threshold of 61.18 used in the program’s analysis.
Arley has also built a market for suitable Speckle Park-infused steers from producers using its bulls, connecting seedstock clients with a supply pathway that meets its butcher and restaurant customers’ needs.
In South Australia, Graeme and Amanda Kroehn are achieving similar results through a grass-fed system at Belgrae, joining Angus, Red Angus and F1 Speckle Park females to Speckle Park bulls, with progeny targeted to reach at least 440kg liveweight between 12 to 14 months of age. After Belgrae began supplying Greenham into the Woolworths supply chain, MLA benchmarked the property’s kill data: an average MSA Index of 60.90, with most scores between 61 and 63.
“We weren’t looking for a breed because of its appearance,” Graeme said.
“We were looking for cattle that could efficiently convert grass into kilograms and deliver a quality carcase. The Speckle Park cattle have done exactly that.”
These results come from individual businesses under different conditions rather than a single controlled comparison, but their value lies in showing how paddock observations can be checked against processor feedback.
Turning performance into evidence
SPI’s Commercial Register connects bull selection with the eventual performance of commercial progeny. Eligible steers and heifers with known Speckle Park pedigree can be recorded and evaluated alongside their contemporaries. Where groups stay together, weights and processor feedback can show how individual bulls performed on the rail, not only the scales. That information can flow into BREEDPLAN and improve the accuracy of EBVs, giving producers clearer feedback on successful bulls and matings and breeders stronger evidence for the genetics they offer. The register also helps build larger datasets across herds, seasons and production systems.
Getting ahead of the market
Simon is realistic about where the market sits today: Speckle Park-infused cattle are not yet attracting an automatic premium simply because of their genetics. But he sees that gap as opportunity rather than obstacle. Chalambra’s turn-off has so far gone through AuctionsPlus, which Simon values for reaching a wider field of buyers than the local saleyards. The next step is building direct relationships with feedlots, with a partial finishing program under consideration.
Larger, more consistent lines still need to be built, and buyers need confidence that cattle will repeatedly meet weight, performance and carcase specifications. That is the work ahead, not a weakness in the genetics. Simon believes the commercial attributes are there: feed efficiency, doing ability, carcase yield, eating quality and retail meat yield.
“The efficiency gains show up in the paddock straight away,” he said.
Market recognition is catching up, and producers building the data and supply relationships now, through tools like the Commercial Register, are best placed to capture it first.
At Chalambra, the market story is still being built, but the on-farm efficiency story is becoming harder to ignore. The question for other producers is equally direct: how much cow can their country afford?
