It isn’t every day that a saleyards complex comes to market, but the Moree Plains Shire Council is presently looking to sell or lease its mothballed saleyards facility in northern NSW.
The Moree Livestock Selling Centre is located not far from town, on the Newell Highway.
Cattle sales were held weekly at the MLSC yards prior to its closure in February 2022. At the peak of its operations, the yards regularly yarded around 7000 cattle, the information memorandum claims.
The shire-owned yards were most recently operated by the Moree Livestock Selling Agents Association.
Following a review of the MLSC, it was recommended that Council conduct an expressions of interest seeking parties to lease, maintain and operate, or purchase the facility.
The property comprises a 16ha site within the Moree Special Activation Precinct and adjacent to the Inland Rail. The site currently features an aging selling and holding livestock facility which would require upgrades to meet current industry standards.
The stockholding facility comprises of cattle selling pens together with overhead walkways and laneways, transport loaders, two weighbridges, feeding and watering systems. There is also a sheep selling facility which also requires substantial upgrade.
Council is now calling for Expressions of Interest for lease or purchase of the facility, including maintenance and operation subject to the condition that the MLSC must continue to be operated as an ongoing commercial concern in Moree at its current location for the term of the lease. Alternatively, the council is also seeking non-complying EOIs for additional or alternate uses for the site.
Expressions of interest close on 1 March.
