The big advantages local operators are seeing in the Cicare over the popular Robinson two-seat machines are:</p>
<ul>
<li>
At current currency rates, the Robinson 22 purchase price is around $260,000 complete, compared with less than $95,000 for the Cicare (not including building time – estimated at around four weeks).</li>
<li>
The considerably heavier R22 uses around 32 litres of AvGas an hour, compared with the Cicare’s claimed consumption of 18 litres/hr, using cheaper Premium Unleaded motor fuel or the more expensive Avgas.</li>
<li>
Lower running costs, apart from fuel. For example the much lighter operating weight than an R22 puts less stress on components like rotor blades. R22 blades and tail rotors have to be changed every 2200 hours, while the composite blades on a Cicare do not have a lifespan limitation. The Rotax motors are much easier to service than the R22s Lycoming.</li>
<li>
Cruising speed of 80 knots is identical to an R22. </li>
</ul>
<p>
In combination, these points present a number of opportunities for the extensive beef industry, supporters say. The low purchase price may bring the Cicare machines within the budget of a greater number of cattle producers, raising the prospect of more private heli-mustering operations, rather than hiring contractors using R22s at around $260/hour plus fuel. Similarly, owner-operators currently using R22s could greatly reduce their operating costs by moving to a Cicare.</p>
<p>
While the Cicare has a payload limit of around 100kg (not including pilot), it can be set up with a storage box to carry a chainsaw, fencing tools and enough wire for many on-the-job fencing repairs, for example.</p>
