THE Kimberley Meat Company has been renamed Pindan Beef Co ahead of its re-opening next year, after it was purchased by a Canadian super fund manager in 2025.

The renaming of the processing facility near Broome in Western Australia comes as no surprise, given the troubled history of the meatworks.

One local source told Beef Central the renaming symbolises a fresh start for the company which has made a concerted effort to support local businesses who were not paid for work conducted at the former KMC.

The new logo for Pindan Beef Co, sourced from the Derby Outback Rodeo & Campdraft FB page, as the company is a sponsor of the event.

Last year Yougawalla Pastoral Co, chief operations officer Justin Morrissey told Beef Central it was important for the company to work with businesses that were owed money by the previous operators of Yeeda.

“We have and will continue to give preferential treatment to those contractors who are owed money by the previous owners,” he said in November 2025.

“We want to make amends to the past and working with local contractors and businesses is key to our future, so we have already engaged previous contractors.”

At the time of the interview Mr Morrissey said the company had planned to spend $20 million upgrading the KMC plant to get it operational, but one local source speculated it could be double that given the significant amount of work that has taken place at the facility.

Facility is set to open at start of 2027

Industry stakeholders in the Broome region have told Beef Central the re-opening of the facility next year will be a game-changer for the local beef industry and the facility would likely be strongly supported.

“With fuel prices as high as they are, it is not currently economical for us to send our cattle south, it’s a real squeeze. So, we are excited for Pindan Beef to open and everyone will support them,” the contact said.

The Derby Outback Rodeo and Campdraft association acknowledged Pindan Beef Co on its Facebook page for its sponsorship of the event.

“Formerly the Kimberley Meat Co, Pindan Beef is under new ownership and re-opening in 2026 following a significant plant upgrade,” the social media post stated.

“They’re looking forward to working with the community and pastoral industry to bring Kimberley beef to world markets — a big step forward for our region.”

As detailed in Beef Central’s previous article, the company had planned to start processing its own cattle in the last quarter of this year as part of a soft start to “iron out all the bumps” before opening to the rest of industry in 2027, Mr Morrissey said.

One source said there had been some red tape delays for the company, but he expected Pindan would start processing its own cattle from its Yougawalla Pastoral Co properties in October.

“There have been fires at Shamrock and Yeeda, so they lost a few paddocks of feed this year which will make them keen to start processing cattle of those places to lighten the load,” the source told Beef Central.

The same source shared the plans to build a feedyard at Yougawalla’s Shamrock property, which is located 160km from Broome was now also complete with 12 centre pivots producing fodder and silage to feed the cattle.

Another industry participant said the feeling is very positive and optimistic as the whole industry will benefit from having the plant up and running and running well.
