THE organisers of the Ekka beef section say the show is heading for significant improvement with a $287.5m construction of the Olympics village.

There has been some concern the Ekka is heading for significant disruptions, with the RNA showgrounds becoming a significant part of the Brisbane 2032 games.

This week, the Qld Government and the RNA signed off on a deal to build the athletes village at the grounds – which will include a 20,000 seat main arena, grandstands, horse pavilion and accessibility upgrades.

Speaking on The Week in Beef podcast, RNA Councillor Lachie Hart who is a member of the RNA beef committee said Ekka Beef Week will continue to be held at the Brisbane Showgrounds until 2032, even while construction is underway.

He also said at the end of the development, there will be more accommodation for the exhibitors.

“The RNA Council has just this week signed a significant partnership with the Queensland Government to redevelop the RNA showgrounds for readiness for the Athletes Olympic Village in 2032,” Mr Hart said.

“From all the reports we’ve been receiving from the builders and the developers, whilst there might be some minor disruption, we will continue to hold the Ekka every year between now and the Olympic Games.

“We are definitely on next year, same time, same place and we will probably have a little bit more accommodation for the lead steers, so that’s really exciting for us.”

Mr Hart explained the $285 million investment over the next two years will improve the exhibition for everyone involved.

“It is going to be a remarkable improvement in the quality and offerings that we can provide our exhibitors, and of course the public that come and see these beautiful animals on parade,” Mr Hart said.

Helping ease the housing crisis

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the development will also help ease housing crisis.

“This is about securing the future of an iconic Queensland institution while creating a world-class precinct for events, entertainment and inner-city living,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“The Ekka’s future is not only secured, it’ll be bigger and better than ever and also able to continue while construction is underway.”

RNA CEO Brendan Christou said the announcement reinforced the long-term future of the Ekka at the Brisbane Showgrounds.

“As Queenslanders celebrate 150 years of Ekka this year, this announcement ensures that our iconic and beloved Show remains here, at its birthplace, for another 150 years,” Mr Christou said.

“The upgraded Main Arena will strengthen the Showgrounds as a destination for major events, entertainment and community life, while allowing us to welcome the world during the Games, and ensure the Ekka remains at the heart of the site for generations to come.”
