Roma sale 8 Aug 2023: Market lifts with quality lines of yearling steers

A fair panel of buyers were present with one major cow buyer absent from the buying gallery, and feedlotters and backgrounders were active.

Cattle were drawn from NSW with western cattle coming in from Quilpie, Augathella area as well the the local district.

The market showed an improvement with quality lines of well bred yearling steers 2c to 4c better and up to 14c/kg for heavy yearling steers.

Light weight yearling heifers were firm and a lift in the quality of the medium weights improved average prices by 20c/kg. Well finished western bullocks sold to a dearer trend.

However heavy weight score 3 and 4 cows lost 8c to 10c/kg. Light weight yearling steers to restockers sold to 374c to average 348c/kg. Yearling steers under 330 kg averaged 347c and made to 370c/kg. Medium weight steers to feed made to 362c to average 346c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to 358c to average 342c/kg.

Light weight heifers averaged 234c and to made to 260c/kg. Yearling heifers to feed averaged from 250c to 268c and sold to 310c/kg. Well finished bullocks sold to 300c to average 295c/kg. Medium weight score 2 cows averaged 187c and made to 207c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score averaged 211c and the best of the heavy weights made to 230c to average 222c/kg.

Heavy weight bulls made to 278c/kg.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 376c/kg and averaged 350c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 374c/kg and averaged 343c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 370c/kg and averaged 344c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 356c/kg and averaged 326c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 358c/kg and averaged 321c/kg.
