With warmer weather on its way, prices also heated up at the Roma Saleyards’ Tuesday Sale.

With just over 10,000 head of cattle yarded, the market remained strong for the majority of steer and heifer types, while the cow job softened in the afternoon for the first time in weeks.

All the regular processors, lotfeeders and backgrounders were present and actively bidding, with strong competition from northern NSW buyers also in the mix.

Cattle were drawn primarily from the local supply district, including Roma, Mitchell, St George, Wallumbilla, Mungallala and Morven.

The yarding also featured cattle from the northern regions including Longreach, Winton, Boulia, Richmond as well as far south as Coonamble in NSW and Middleton in SA.

The quality and selection of cattle on offer once again showcased Roma Saleyards as the marketplace of choice.

HP Grazing offloaded a quality run of 193 Simbrah cross steers to average 477c/kg to weigh 245kg for a return of $1,169/hd.

Based out of ‘Belgaum’, the St George producers made a straight 480c/kg for three pens weighing 235kg to make an average 1,127/hd.

A pen of the Simbrah cross steers fetched 476c/kg weighing in at 257kg for a return of $1,226/hd.

The line was consigned through Elders St George.

NLRS Commentary:

Recent strong export demand saw a lift in numbers to 10,000 head at Roma this week with about 3300 prime cows included in the line up. Cattle were mostly drawn from the local areas and the far west, and overall quality was good. Increased competition from northern NSW saw yearling steers lift in price and heavy weight classes met increased support from the usual feedlots and processors.  Large numbers of prime cows penned saw all the major exporters operating in an easier market.

Light weight restocker steers saw an isolated top of 518.2c for a pen of pure British bred calves with most pens averaging 467c, up 33c.  Interstate competition saw steers 280 to 330kg improve by 23c making to 490.2c to average 454c while medium weight steers 330 to 400kg lifted by 35c topping at 480.2c to average 451c/kg. Medium weight steers to feed sold to 436.2c to average 421c and feeders 400 to 480kgs topped at 478.2c to average 426c/kg. Heavy feeders made to 450.2c/kg

Light weight restocker heifers also gained 26c on previous weeks selling to 446.2c averaging 411c while heavy weight PTE heifers to feed sold to 438.2c with most around 409c/kg.

Grown steers lifted by 5c with those 500 to 600kg selling to 437.2c to average 414c while heavy prime heifers sold to 439.2c to average 403c. With large numbers of prime cows yarded across the state, medium weight 3 score cows saw a top price of 390.2c to average 357c while the plainer types averaged 287c/kg. Heavy cows over 520kg could not maintain the level of the previous week easing 5c, selling to 416.2c with most around 390c/kg.
