Yarding: 7025 Change: -248

On par with last week’s penning over 7000 head of cattle went to market at Roma Saleyards with firm to dearer trends reflected.

It was not just the weather heating up, but prices too with upwards of 15 cents recorded across several categories.

Local and afar cattle made up the yarding with lines once again drawn largely from western regions such as Charleville, Longreach, Muttaburra, Ilfracombe and Augathella among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Condobolin and Walgett regions in New South Wales.

The market was reflective of condition, however quality lines remained firm and an increase in prices were recorded across categories.

The regular processors, feed-lotters and backgrounders were all present and active throughout the sale.

Vendors Kathy Moloney and Ross Graham, Kandarra, Wallumbilla sold 40 Angus and black Simmental cross weaner steers to average 413c/kg at 283kg and returned an average of $1169 per head.

The commercial producers operate a predominantly breeding enterprise at their Maranoa block turning off weaners on a bi-annual basis.

Crossing black Simmental and Angus genetics, Ms Moloney said the type and temperament of the breeds appealed.

“We are able to produce soft and quiet cattle,” she said.

A pen of their 30 Angus cross weaner steers fetched 412c/kg to weigh 286kg and returned $1177/hd.

A further pen of their 10 Simmental cross steers sold for 414c/kg to weigh 276kg and returned $1143/hd.

Vendor Malcolm Jukes, Boxvale Trading took advantage of the current backgrounder market selling 39 Simmental and Charolais cross steers to average 398c/kg weighing in at 317kg to return $1263/hd.

Based at Boxvale, Morven the commercial producer operates a primarily breeding venture turning off weaners on average three times a year.

Crossing Simmental and Charolais breeds, Mr Jukes said the weight for age and maturing traits of the progeny suited his operation.

A pen of his 18 Simmental and Charolais cross steers fetched 392c/kg to weigh 333kg and returned $1307/hd.

A further pen of his 20 Angus cross steers reached 406c/kg weighing in at 300kg and returned $1219/hd.

Impressing in this week’s sale with a quality line of steers were the Price family of Mt Hope, Wallumbilla, who sold a run of 271 Droughtmaster cross steers to average 391c/kg to weigh 386kg and returned $1508/hd.

Four pens of their steers sold for a straight 430c/kg.

These pens saw an increase of 14 cents on last week’s maximum of 416c/kg in the 330 to 400-kilogram weight range category.

A pen of their 23 Droughtmaster cross steers fetched 430c/kg to weigh 369kg and returned $1586/hd.

Equally impressive, the Gray Partnership, Abrach Station, Muttaburra sold 125 Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 417c/kg weighing in at 315kg and returned $1313/hd.

A pen of their 32 Santa Gertrudis cross weaner steers reached a top of 444c/kg to weigh 272kg and returned $1208/hd.

An increase of 24 cents on last week’s maximum of 420c/kg in the 200 to 280-kilogram weight range category.

A further pen of their 14 Santa Gertrudis cross heifers fetched 300c/kg to weigh 528kg and returned $1585/hd.

The line was consigned through GDL Wandoan.

In the heifer selection, the 280-to-330-kilogram range topped at 350c/kg, averaging 296c/kg. Heifers in the 330-to-400-kilogram range topped at 350c/kg, averaging 303c/kg.

Hereward Beef, Bude Station, Longreach sold Brahman cross heifers to fetch 330c/kg, reaching a top of $1891 to average $1244.

Cows in the 330-to-400-kilogram range reached 270c/kg and averaged 204c/kg with the 400-to-500-kilogram range topping at 295c/kg, to average 254c/kg.

Cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 310c/kg, to average 282c/kg.

NLRS Commentary

Roma Agents yarded 7,025 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders active.

A mixed quality yarding penned similar to last sale.

However the market improved for most descriptions by as much as 20c/kg.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg sold from 350c to 395c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg topped 444c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg sold from 300c to 438c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg sold well to make to 430c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg sold to 398c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg topped 378c/kg.

Heifers also improved in price for most weight categories. Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg topped 308c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold from 202c to 340c/kg for the better quality. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg with the majority making to 338c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg also improved and made to 350c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg with most selling from 250c to 341c and over 480kg topping 334c/kg.

Grown steers 400 to 500kg lifted in price considerably to 378c/kg. Grown steers 500 to 600kg also improved and sold from 340c to 375c/kg to processors. The over 600kg bullocks to 350c/kg also purchased by processors.

Grown heifers over 540kg topped 330c/kg. With reduced numbers in the cow section to 980 head but the market did rise slightly with the 2 score selling from 200c to 270c/kg. The 3 score cows topped 310c/kg. The best of the heavy weight bulls over 600kg sold to 314c with those under 600kg sold from 200c to 352c/kg.
