Yarding: 5703 Change: -55

Over 5500 head of cattle went to market at Roma Saleyards with prices holding firm to slightly softening in some categories reflective of condition.

The yarding was once again on par with last week’s penned numbers totalling 5703.

Agents noted recent beneficial scattered thunderstorms in the local supply area.

The regular processors, backgrounders and feed-lotters were in attendance.

Local and afar cattle made up the yarding with lines drawn from western regions such as Augathella, Cunnamulla, Boulia, Stonehenge, Isisford, Quilpie, Muttaburra and Morven among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Innamincka, South Australia.

Several large and quality lines were offloaded and sold to an active buyers’ presence.

The Campbell family, St Lucia, Boulia offloaded a mammoth line of 835 Brangus cross steers to average 337c/kg weighing in at 360kg to return an average of $1215 per head.

A joint commercial operation, the producers utilise their northern Mount Isa property as a breeding block with their weaners later fattened at St Lucia based in far western Queensland.

A pen of their 23 Brangus cross steers fetched 372c/kg to weigh 396kg and returned $1474/hd.

A further pen of their 23 Brangus cross steers sold for 368c/kg to weigh 454kg and returned $1670/hd.

On the lighter end, a further pen of their 23 Brangus cross steers fetched 364c/kg weighing in at 333kg to return $1211/hd.

The offload was a part of the vendors annual turnoff. The pens were snapped up by an active buyers’ presence.

The females equally impressed with several quality lines on offer in the heifer selection.

Vendors Shane and Maryanne Russell offloaded a line of 145 Charolais cross weaner heifers to average 321c/kg weighing 289kg and returned $928/hd.

Four pens of their heifers sold for a straight 330c/kg.

Based at Willara, Augathella, the commercial producers run a primarily breeding operation targeting the weaner market in their offloads.

Their daughter Kristy Russell said the quiet temperament of the Charolais breed was an appeal to their family operation.

“They do well and hold a good weight for age,” she said.

A pen of their 33 Charolais cross heifers fetched 330c/kg to weigh 318kg and returned $1051/hd.

A further pen of their eight Charolais cross heifers sold for 312c/kg weighing 355kg to return $1108/hd.

Further vendors, the Zambonetti family, Franovillers, Cunnamulla sold 87 Angus and Wagyu weaner heifers to average 296c/kg weighing 273kg to return an average of $809/hd.

A pen of their 45 Angus heifers reached 312c/kg to weigh 278kg and returned $869/hd.

Cows in the 330-to-400-kilogram range reached 210c/kg and averaged 187c/kg, whereas cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 280c/kg, averaging 247c/kg.

Cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 298c/kg, averaging 269c/kg with the over 600-kilogram range topping at 288c/kg and averaging 281c/kg.

NLRS Commentary:

With some quite beneficial storms in the supply district Roma Agents yarded 5,703 head. Cattle were also drawn from South Australia NSW and the normal supply area. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present and active. The market could not maintain the levels of last sale mainly due to the quality penned. However certified grain fed steers sold to 346c/ kg. Cows topping 298c/kg.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg sold from 340c to 402c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg sold from 300c to 426c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg made to 396c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg with the majority making from 320c to 392c/kg to feed. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg improved 11c/kg to make 356c to restockers and 372c/kg to feed. Yearling steers over 480kg topped 360c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg with the majority selling from 220c to 308c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg made to 312c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg sold to 330c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg much improved to make 310c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg also improved and made to 326c/kg. Yearling heifers over 480kg made to 318c/kg.

Grown steers 400 to 500kg sold from 324c to 380c/kg. Grown steers 500 to 600 to feed topped 380c/kg. Bullocks over 600kg to 330c with certified grainfed bullocks to 344c/kg Grown heifers over 540kg topping 315c/kg.

The cow market firm to slightly dearer. The 2 score cows selling from 210c to 266c/kg. The 3 score cows over 520kg topped 298c to average 278c/kg. Still plenty of bulls on offer with bulls under 450kg selling to 356c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg selling to 288c and heavy bulls over 600kg to 301c/kg.

1940 Grazing Company, Bowood, Mitchell sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 420c/kg, reaching a top of $1,389 to average $1,177.

Pemberley Grazing, New Deer, Isisford sold Droughtmaster steers to 410c/kg, reaching a top of $1,215 to average $906. The Droughtmaster cross heifers sold to 304c/kg, reaching a top of $1,498 to average $768.

A Swan, Springtime, Wallumbilla sold Angus steers to 398c/kg, reaching a top of $1,850 to average $1,382.

JW McDonald, Wyrara, Charleville sold Droughtmaster cross steers to 396c/kg, reaching a top of $1,089 to average $1,024.
