It may have been a rain affected yarding at Roma Saleyards this week, but the quality remained solid, and so too did the prices with upwards of 15 cents recorded across some categories.

Just shy of 5000 head of cattle went to market with firm to dearer trends reflected dependent on condition.

The yarding featured several lines of quality heavy steers and lighter weight heifers, which sold to an active buyers’ presence of processors, backgrounders and feed-lotters.

Lines were once again drawn primarily from the Maranoa and western regions such as Julia Creek, Longreach, Dirranbandi, McKinlay, Boulia, Muttaburra, Quilpie, Stonehenge, Windorah and Winton among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Coober Pedy and Innamincka, South Australia.

Vendor Bruce Smith, Coleraine, Mitchell offloaded a total head of 82 Santa Gertrudis and Angus cross steers to average 376c/kg at 484kg and returned an average of $1820 per head.

The commercial producer operates a predominately fattening enterprise across his Maranoa block targeting the heavy feeder market.

Four pens of Smith’s steers sold for a straight 376c/kg.

A pen of his 17 Santa Gertrudis cross steers sold for 376c/kg weighing 513kg to return $1930/hd.

The pen saw an increase of 18 cents on last week’s maximum of 358c/kg in the 500-to-600-kilogram weight range category.

A pen of his 27 Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched 376c/kg weighing 482kg and returned $1811/hd.

A further pen of his 13 Angus cross steers fetched 376c/kg to weigh 477kg and returned $1794/hd.

The consignment was trucked from their Muttaburra based property Llorac.

The commercial producers operate a breeding enterprise across their western Queensland blocks regularly selling out of the Roma Saleyards.

A pen of their 17 Brahman cross steers reached 324c/kg to weigh 373kg and returned $1209/hd.

The offload was a part of their annual turnoff.

The producers also sold 35 Brahman cross cows to average 262c/kg to weigh 485kg and returned an average of $1270/hd.

A pen of their six Brahman cross cows fetched 286c/kg to weigh 588kg and returned $1684/hd.

Based at Glenrowan, Morven, the commercial producers also operate a breeding venture targeting the lighter feeder market in their offloads.

A pen of their 11 Angus cross steers reached 370c/kg to weigh 385kg and returned $1423/hd.

A further pen of their 17 Braford steers sold for 360c/kg weighing 355kg to return $1279/hd.

The females equally impressed with several quality lines snatched up in the heifer selection.

Vendor Cam Flower offloaded a line of 334 Santa Gertrudis, Hereford and Angus cross heifers to average 354c/kg weighing 347kg and returned $1226/hd.

Based at Garrabarra, Roma the commercial producer operates a primarily breeding enterprise targeting both domestic and export markets.

Four pens of Flower’s heifers sold for a straight 356c/kg, while a further eight pens fetched a straight 352c/kg.

A pen of his 28 Santa Gertrudis cross heifers fetched 356c/kg to weigh 356kg and returned $1267/hd.

The pen saw an increase of 34 cents on last week’s maximum of 322c/kg in the 330-to-400-kilogram weight range category.

A further pen of his 30 Angus cross heifers sold for 352c/kg weighing 367kg to return $1293/hd.

The pen too saw a premium of 30 cents on last week’s maximum of 333c/kg in the 330-to-400-kilogram weight range category.

The offload was a part of his annual turnoff.

In the cow job, cows in the 330-to-400-kilogram range reached 250c/kg and averaged 175c/kg, whereas cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 291c/kg to average 235c/kg.

Cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 295c/kg, averaging 272c/kg. Cows over 600-kilograms topped at 290c/kg to average 273c/kg.

The Bryant family, Cytheren, Mitchell sold Simmental cross cows to 295c/kg, reaching a top of $1635 to average $1476.

The line was also consigned through MAA Livestock and Property.

 

NLRS Commentary:

With some very inclement weather conditions Roma Agents yarded 4,898 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present and active. Buyers opting to purchase lines of cattle with the market stronger for most descriptions.

Light weight Yearling steers under 200kg topped 448c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg with the better lines selling to 456c and the plainer types sold from 304c to 360c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg making to 404c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg also improved in price and sold to 400c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg also sold well to 384c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg made to 351c/kg to processors.

Light weight Yearling heifers under 200kg sold from 202c to 300c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg also made from 200c to 300c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg with the lead making to 352c to average 311c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg sold from 234c to 356c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg with processors active on the majority and sold to 332c/kg. Yearling heifers over 480kg topped 336c/kg.

Grown steers over 600kg topped 330c/kg. Grown heifers over 540kg made to 330c/kg. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg sold from 200c to 268c and the 3 score cows over 520kg made 295c/kg. Heavy bulls over 600kg topped 295c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg made to 336c and the bulls under 450kg made from 254c to 338c/kg.

A total of 4,898 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 448c/kg and averaged 391c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 456c/kg and averaged 377c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 414c/kg and averaged 365c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 400c/kg and averaged 363c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 385c/kg and averaged 362c/kg.

WF & ME Allison, Broadlands Station, McKinlay sold Angus steers to 428c/kg, reaching a top of $1,213 to average $1,063.
