Roma Saleyards market report – Tuesday, 11 February

A rise in numbers led to favourable prices as the market held firm to slightly dearer at Roma Saleyards this week.
Recent, welcomed rainfall in the west saw just under 5,500 head of cattle sold.
The penning was once again shaped by condition with several high-quality steer and heifer lines on offer under the hammer.
Cattle were yarded from Maranoa and western regions, including the following areas: Eromanga, Cunnamulla, Tambo, Thallon, McKinlay, Barcaldine, Augathella and Morven.
The yarding featured several consignments from both northern and southern regions with cattle also drawn from Alice Springs, NT and Warren, NSW.
The diverse selection of cattle once again showcased Roma Saleyards as the marketplace of choice with strong buyer interest and active bidding throughout the sale.
An even yarding saw 2280 steers and 2274 heifers sold. Cows followed suit at 819 with 31 bulls offloaded.
The Forrest family, Fields Pastoral Company, Skibbereen, Eurella sold 89 Angus cross steers to average 411c/kg weighing 336kg and returned $1379/hd.
Two pens sold for 424c/kg with a further one pen fetching 418c/kg.
A pen of 21 Angus cross steers sold for 424c/kg to weigh 329kg and returned $1396/hd.
A further pen of 29 Angus cross steers sold for 392c/kg weighing in at 370kg to return $1453/hd.
The commercial producers run a breeder operation targeting largely the weaner and feeder markets.
Crossing Angus and Santa Gertrudis types, the Forrest’s said the optimal weight for age and gains were an appeal of the breeds.

Tanya and Bruce Dawes, Barr Park, Roma offloaded 34 Santa Gertrudis and Angus cross heavy steers to average 344c/kg weighing 576kg and returned $1980/hd.
A pen of 10 Santa Gertrudis bullocks sold for 346c/kg to weigh 588kg and returned $2036/hd.
A further pen of 9 Angus cross steers sold for 345c/kg weighing in at 587kg to return $2024/hd.
The line was supplemented on oats last year and recently finished on grain before being sold.

The Russell family, Willara, Augathella offloaded 48 Charolais and Droughtmaster cross steers to average 439c/kg weighing 322kg and returned $1412/hd.
Three pens sold for 452c/kg straight with a further pen fetching 420c/kg.
A pen of 18 Charolais cross steers sold for 452c/kg to weigh 350kg and returned $1583/hd.
An increase of 34 cents over last week’s top price of 418c/kg in the 330-to-400-kilogram weight category.
A pen further of 4 Droughtmaster cross steers fetched 420c/kg to weigh 323kg and returned $1355/hd.

Four pens of Santa-Droughtie cross heifers sold for a straight 336c/kg. The pens were preg-tested empty.
A pen of 36 Santa Gertrudis cross heifers sold for 336c/kg to weigh 316kg and returned $1061/hd.
A further pen of 30 Droughtmaster cross heifers sold for 336c/kg weighing in at 296kg to return $996/hd.
The offload was part of the vendors turnoff.

NLRS Commentary:
Despite wonderful falls of rain in the Western supply district Roma Agents yarded 5,321 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present and active. Cattle were drawn from the normal supply area of QLD as well as northern NSW.The market was firm to marginally dearer for most categories.
Yearling steers 200 to 280kg 350c to 438c/kg back to restockers. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg also improved and sold 452c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg with the majority selling from 300c to 452c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg however did not improve and sold to 400c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg made from 300c to 350c/kg.
Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 208c to 348c/kg for the better lines. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg improved on last sale and made to 360c to average 327c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg also gained ground in price and sold from 264c to 354c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg made from 296c to 322c to feed and 324c/kg restockers.
Grown steers 500 to 600kg topped 349c and sold from 240c to average 339c/kg. Bullocks over 600kg sold to 350c/kg. Grown heifers over 480kg improved in price and sold to 318c/kg to processors. A large number of quality cows penned experienced more demand from processors. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg sold from 200c to 269c/kg. The 3 score cows over 520kg made to 300/kg. Bulls over 600kg topped 298c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg sold from 274c to 300c/kg.
A large yarding of western bred cows and calves sold from $1280/unit to $1820/unit.

A total of 5,321 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.
Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 432c/kg and averaged 366c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 438c/kg and averaged 389c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 452c/kg and averaged 397c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 452c/kg and averaged 385c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 400c/kg and averaged 353c/kg.
