Roma Saleyards market report – Tuesday, 10 December

Local scattered showers continued to bolster market confidence swinging into summer as prices remained steady at Roma Saleyards this week dependent on quality and condition.
Just over 5,000 head of cattle were sold at the second-to-last sale of 2024 – an increase of 1921 on last week’s penning.
The regular processors, backgrounders and feedlotters were present and actively bidding.
The yarding consisted of cattle from both local areas and farther afield with consignments trucked from western regions such as Julia Creek, Bollon, Winton, Jundah, Blackall, Tambo, Longreach and Eromanga.
The yarding featured several lines of quality weaner and feeder steers.
Vendors Ron and Therese Sevil sold 96 Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 397c/kg weighing 373kg and returned $1481 per head.
Based at Kenilworth, Mitchell, the commercial producers primarily run a breeder operation targeting the feeder market in their offloads depending on seasonal conditions.
With a focus on temperament and polled genetics, Mr Sevil said they utilised Rosevale Santa Gertrudis bulls over their Santa breeder herd.
Mr Sevil said the blend of hardiness and performance of the traditional Santa Gertrudis breed appealed to their operation.
A pen of their 26 Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched 402c/kg to weigh 356kg and returned $1431/hd.
A further pen of their 24 Santa Gertrudis cross steers sold for 400c/kg weighing 378kg to return $1514/hd.
The producers also sold 44 Santa Gertrudis cross heifers to average 295c/kg to weigh 360kg and returned an average of $1060/hd.
As the Maranoa region continues to experience beneficial rainfall, Mr Sevil said they had recorded upwards of 100mm in the recent local downpours.
“We’ve had an excellent season so far,” he said.
The line was consigned through Elders Mitchell.
Vendor James Muller, Kenellen, Kynuna also capitalised on the feeder market selling 130 Droughtmaster cross steers to average 393c/kg weighing 372kg to return an average of $1461/hd.
Five pens of his Droughtmaster steers sold for a straight 396c/kg.
A pen of 30 Droughtmaster cross steers fetched 396c/kg to weigh 400kg and returned $1584/hd.
A further pen of 25 Droughtmaster cross steers sold for 396c/kg weighing 383kg and returned $1518/hd.
Mr Muller also offloaded 26 Droughtmaster cross heifers to average 328c/kg weighing 345kg to return an average of $1130/hd.

Further vendors Eurara Cattle, Bogong, Dirranbandi sold 98 crossbred steers to average 394c/kg weighing 376kg and returned an average of $1482/hd.
A pen of their 21 Simmental cross steers fetched 400c/kg to weigh 346kg and returned $1384/hd.
A further pen of their 21 Droughtmaster cross steers fetched 398c/kg to weigh 401kg and return $1597/hd.
The offload was a part of the vendors annual turnoff.

The weaner steer market remained strong, consistently delivering returns of 480c/kg and higher dependent on condition.
Zach Geltch and Vivienne Elliott, Z and V Contracting, Winton offloaded 88 Charolais and Simmental cross weaner steers to average 461c/kg weighing 262kg and returned an average of $1210/hd.
Two pens of the producers Charolais and Simmental cross weaner steers fetched 496c/kg.
A pen of 16 Simmental cross weaner steers fetched 496c/kg to weigh 271kg and returned $1346/hd.
A further pen of their 24 Charolais cross weaner steers fetched 496c/kg to weigh 266kg and returned $1321/hd.

SmithCo Management, Innisfallen, Morven sold nine Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 477c/kg to weigh 265kg and returned an average of $1261/hd.
A pen of their eight Santa Gertrudis cross weaner steers fetched 498c/kg weighing 246kg and returned $1227/hd.
The line was consigned through PJH Livestock and Property.
Cows in the 330-to-400-kilogram range reached 256c/kg and averaged 227c/kg, whereas cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 324c/kg, to average 268c/kg.
Cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 300c/kg, averaging 283c/kg. Cows over 600-kilograms topped at 306c/kg, to average 298c/kg.
Freeman Pastoral Co, Meeleebee Downs, Wallumbilla sold Brahman cross cows to 300c/kg, reaching a top of $1930 to average $1733.
The final sale of 2024 will take place next Tuesday, 17 December with the first sale of the New Year kicking off on Tuesday, 14 January 2025.
NLRS Commentary:
With scattered showers and the second last sale for 2024 Roma Agents yarded 5317 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present. The yarding consisted of mixed quality steers and heifers with heavy weight prime cows.
Light weight yearling steers under 200kg sold to dearer trend and made to 494c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 300c to 498c/kg for the better lines. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg also sold from 300c to 480c and the 330 to 400kg made to 448c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg topped 406c/kg to feed.
Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg made to 358c and sold from 200c/kg for the secondary lines. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg improved in price and sold to 362c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg with a large majority selling from 280c to 356c/kg back to the paddock. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg also improved on last sale and sold to 358c/kg.
Grown steers 400 to 500kg made to 370c to feed . Grown steers 500 to 600kg made to 320c/kg to processors. Grown steers over 600kg topped 339c/kg also to processors. Grown heifers over 540kg sold from 240c for the plainer types to 330c to feed and 324c/kg to processors.
The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg sold from 208c to 260c/kg. The 3 score cows selling from 270c with the heavy weights making to 306c/kg. Heavy bulls over 600kg topping 296c/kg. Bulls under 600kg topping 300c/kg.

A total of 5,319 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.
Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 494c/kg and averaged 408c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 498c/kg and averaged 442c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 474c/kg and averaged 416c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 436c/kg and averaged 398c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 402c/kg and averaged 381c/kg.
Z & V Contracting, Cork, Winton sold Simmental cross steers to 496c/kg, reaching a top of $1,397 to average $1,209. The Simmental cross heifers sold to 348c/kg, reaching a top of $1,312 to average $858.
