Teys Condamine to host new Northern Angus grainfed performance competition

Jon Condon 21/01/2026

UP to 1000 Angus and Angus-influenced feeder cattle could be assembled for a new northern grainfed performance competition being launched in Queensland this year.

Angus Australia and Teys will host the new Angus for Every System Feedlot & Carcase Trial.

The competition is roughly modelled on southern Australia’s annual Teys Angus Shoot-Out competition held each year at the company’s Jindalee feedlot in southern NSW, gauging entries on feedlot performance and carcase quality.

Entries for the inaugural Angus for Every System performance trial opened on Monday, and will close on 1 March. The organisers have set their sights high, hopeful of accumulating up to 1000 head from breeders across Central and Southern Queensland and northern NSW, made up of teams of ten steers.

The 140-day trial promises to be one of the nation’s leading opportunities for northern producers to benchmark Angus influenced cattle and access comprehensive, industry relevant performance data, across feedlot performance and carcase quality and yield phases.

A key feature is that separate classes are provided for cattle carrying 100pc, 75pc (second cross) and 50pc (first cross) Angus genetics, both Bos Indicus and non-Bos Indicus derived. This sets the results up for some interesting comparisons in terms of abundance and consistency of marbling, growth rate, MSA index performance and other important commercial parameters.

Live weightgain progress measurement

For the first time in a trial like this, real‑time feedlot weightgain performance data will be generated via Optiweigh units, live streamed through the AngusTech platform.

Entries call for feeder steers 360-480 kg liveweight (ideal 380-460 kg) with 0-2 teeth (ideal 0 teeth).

Detailed carcase and MSA eating quality feedback will follow processing, with all steers scanned at induction. Genomic insights will be provided through Angus SteerSelect to validate breeding programs and inform future decision‑making.

Entries are due to arrive at Teys Condamine feedlot by 14 April, with induction taking place the following day, and processing at Teys Beenleigh plant near Brisbane on 29 August.

Results will be announced during an Angus for Every System Awards Dinner which will serve as the final event at this year’s BeefEx 2026 feedlot industry conference happening on the Gold Coast from 22–24 September.

Competition structure

Producers can enter teams of ten steers, with up to two teams per vendor. Eligibility requires a minimum of 50pc Angus breed content, with classes for 50pc, 75pc, and 100pc Angus, including both Non Indicus and Indicus divisions.

Results will have particular relevance for the breed content claims debate which has bounced around the industry for the past two years.

No HGPs will be used, and pre‑vaccinations will include Zoetis’ RhinoGuard and BoviShield before delivery.

Awards will be presented across all classes for feedlot performance, carcase performance and eating quality, culminating in the Overall Grand Champion Pen, Reserve Champion Pen (Breeders Cup), and Teys sponsored Black Angus categories.
