AUSTRALIAN cattle exports totalled 71,421 head in June, dropping slightly on the previous month following the completion of major annual religious festivals in Indonesia and Vietnam.

With northern stations busy with their annual mustering rounds, shipping activity is maintaining a solid pace with 14 vessels currently operating between Australia’s northern ports of Broome, Darwin and Townsville and the major Asian markets of Indonesia and Vietnam.

June cattle exports from Australia included 56,034 cattle exported to Indonesia, which was 21pc above the five-year-average for June, and 7624 cattle to Vietnam, down by 56pc on the five-year June average.

For the year to date Australian cattle exports have totalled 360,314 head, which is the highest first-half export activity seen since 2021 when 435,314 were exported in the first six months of the year.

The June figures bring the total export volume for the 2023-24 financial year to 746,829 , also the highest volume seen since 2020-21, when 893,148 head were exported.

On the supply side good numbers of cattle are reported to be available across the Kimberley and Northern Territory with the annual turnoff period in full swing, while on the demand side exporters have told Beef Central the pace is slowing from the hectic volumes of earlier in the year when Indonesian importers were seeking to quickly fill gaps created by delayed permit releases.

“They are still buying but it has definitely tightened up for sure,” was how one exporter summarised the situation this morning.
