Charters Towers vets take the guesswork out of reading BullCheck certificates

Beef Central 20/10/2026

WITH North Queensland’s major annual bull sales now kicking off, cattle producers in the region are encouraged to seek assistance in interpreting BullCheck test results comprehensively.

Producers heading to upcoming sales (click here to access Beef Central’s list of remaining 2026 spring sales) are being urged to interpret BullCheck certificates carefully, not just ‘look for the tick.’

Charters Towers veterinary consultancy Gener8 Reproduction warns that useful information on a sale bull can often be overlooked.

“There’s a lot of information on a BullCheck certificate and buyers can get overwhelmed,” Gener8’s Dr Callan Solari said.

“If producers need a hand understanding what’s in front of them, we can talk them through it,” he said.

Bulls offered at major northern sales have already undergone a BullCheck breeding soundness examination.

Gener8 Reproduction’s accredited vets have completed the lion’s share of semen testing for this year’s sales on stud clients’ properties. Most clients also opted for a sperm morphology assessment by the clinic’s in-house morphologist, a recommended but non-compulsory step of the exam, which can provide important insight into a bull’s fertility.

“Sperm morphology is a risk assessment,” Dr Solari said. “It’s not about finding the best bull all the time. It’s about finding the ones that are at high risk of not performing.”

With most northern herds turning bulls into breeder paddocks between December and February, Dr Solari said commercial producers should also test their own bulls every year before the start of the breeding season.

“From that, it can be determined how many bulls actually need to be replaced, before going to the sale, and which of the current bulls are low risk,” he said.

Sound, tested bulls also allow lower joining rates, freeing up the bull-buying budget for better genetics.

About BullCheck

BullCheck is the Australian standard for Veterinary Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation, providing a trusted, objective assessment of a bull’s fertility by accredited veterinarians.

Using standardised methods, BullCheck evaluates key fertility components to determine whether a bull has a high probability of performing successfully in a normal mating situation.

A bull sold as a breeding bull is expected to be capable of breeding. While a BullCheck pass is not an absolute guarantee, it offers buyers and sellers a clear, evidence‑based indication of a bull’s potential breeding value—helping reduce risk in breeding and purchasing decisions.

A comprehensive BullCheck assessment includes animal identification, relevant history, and evaluation of five core fertility components:

  • Physical examination of structure and reproductive tract
  • Testicular examination and scrotal measurement
  • Semen collection and assessment of sperm motility
  • Laboratory evaluation of sperm morphology
  • Serving assessment to assess libido and mating ability, where indicated

The Australian Cattle Veterinarians Association recommends all five components be assessed for higher‑value bulls, including those intended for single‑sire mating or higher mating loads. Vendors and buyers can determine which fertility components best meet their breeding objectives.
