Numbers increased moderately following last week’s dearer market, with cattle quality a highlight. Most were well conditioned, and even the lighter cattle under 400kg carried plenty of condition. The regular buyers were present, including those with feedlot and restocking orders. Competition was strong, particularly for well-bred Angus steers under 500kg, with restockers outbidding feedlots on occasions. Domestic buyers were quieter and focused more on heifers than steers. Most cattle bought to return to the paddock were steers, heading to Victoria, Dubbo and Tamworth. The 280-330kg steers were a standout, gaining 24c to sell for 530-618c/kg and average $1839/head.

Trade steers and heifers eased 9-14c, selling from 440-515c/kg. Feedlot and restocker interest were strongest in the 340-400kg range, although supplies were limited as most cattle weighed over 400kg due to  the excellent season across the supply area. Feeder steers weighing 340-400kg gained 16c to make 522-586c/kg, with restockers paying up to 614c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers improved 10-14c, selling from 480-554c/kg. Restockers paid up to 554c/kg, with steers destined for the paddock averaging $2307/head. Feeder heifer prices were steadier, with medium weights firm to 4c easier at 445-499c/kg.

Export demand strengthened, even with a major supermarket absent from the sale. Heavy steers to suit processors 500-500kg lifted 7c to sell from 476-514c/kg. Strong competition for bullocks pushed prices up 11c, with most making 450-509c/kg. The cow offering consisted mainly of big, heavy types, including quite a number weighing over 800kg. Premium prices for the heavier cows lifted the category by 10c/kg, with sales at 388-437c/kg. Fewer leaner cows were available, and prices ranged from 340-402c/kg.
