Dalby sale 19 August 2026: Declining numbers trend continues, as heavy cattle lift in value

Beef Central 20/08/2026

Yarding 4100 Change -1032

The trend of declining numbers continued at Dalby, with agents penning 4,100 head, down 1,032 from the previous sale. The offering included 816 cows and 233 bulls. There was a wide variation in quality across most classes especially in the young light weight cattle. Export buyer attendance was good along with most of the regular feeder operators.

The strong interstate restocker support evident the previous week was absent, resulting in light weight yearling steers and heifers selling 5c to 30c/kg cheaper with larger declines recorded in some areas. However feeder buyers showed solid demand for yearling steers and heifers that met feeder weight specifications, lifting prices by 5c and up 30c/kg. A fair selection of bullocks sold to a market 20c/kg better. All classes of cows lifted in price with gains 7c to 11c/kg with the vast majority purchased by a Victorian processor.

Light weight yearling steers to restockers made to 540c and averaged from 491c to 508c/kg. Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market made to 538c with most sales from 514c to 518c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to a top of 594c with a good sample averaging 528c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock averaged from 401c to 425c with isolated sales to 490c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed made to 510c and averaged from 447c to 467c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed made to 520c with most sales around 444c/kg.

A handful of bullocks made to 476c and averaged 452c and export heifers made to 446c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows made to 367c averaged 346c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows averaged 375c and the best of the cows averaged 394c and sold to 409c/kg to return $3,662/head. Heavy weight bulls made to 464c/kg some returning $5,406/head.
