Webinar: Driving down shrink – How producers can protect cattle weight in transit

Beef Central 07/07/2026

Leeds Transport operates in some of the most remote parts of the country.

THE next scheduled Beef Connect webinar on 16 July will take a deep dive into the topic of ‘shrink’ in slaughter cattle during transit.

Transporting cattle over long distances can be a stressful process for both animals and producers. Without access to feed and water, cattle can experience significant weight loss – known as ‘shrink’-which can impact their health, productivity, and value.

Shrink occurs as a result of lost fluids, body tissue, faeces, and urine, but the good news is that it’s both measurable and manageable.

Guest presenters will be Meat & Livestock Australia’s Dr Tony Parker and Dr Elizabeth Parker BVSc PhD from Ohio State University.

The pair will talk about:

  • The causes of shrink and its impacts on cattle health and market value
  • Insights into how shrink can be measured and managed in a realistic and cost-effective way
  • Practical strategies that can help minimise shrink, ensuring cattle remain healthier and more market-ready.
