Cattle numbers surged at this week’s sale, with just over 8,400 head penned — more than double the number offered at last week’s Tuesday sale.
The laneways were buzzing with action, with the larger yarding drawing strong interest from the usual buyers, processors, and feedlotters, all actively bidding throughout the day.
Cattle were drawn from the local supply district and northern regions such as Tambo, Winton and Longreach as well as down South as Condobolin, NSW.
Holding firm across several categories, the penning was shaped by condition with several high-quality weaner steer and heifer lines on offer under the hammer.
The broad selection of cattle on offer once again solidified Roma Saleyards as the marketplace of choice.
Fred and Ron Miller from North Kooringa offloaded a large line 431Angus steers to average 469c/kg at 286kg and returned $1,341/hd.
Weaned in early April, the EU Accredited steers were part of the Millers annual turnoff.
Two pens of the Angus steers fetched 482c/kg to weigh 291kg and returned $1,402/hd.
A further pen of heavier steers made to 478c/kg weighing 321kg and returned $1,533/hd.

Lowan Hills Pastoral Co out of Mitchell sold 70 Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 449c/kg weighing 322kg and returned $1445/hd.
Two pens of their Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched a straight 448c/kg to weigh 331kg and returned $1,482/hd.

AJ & KA Curtis of ‘Scotland Downs’, Lundavra offloaded a line of Charbray cross steers to average 403c/kg weighing in at 364kg for a return of $1382/hd.
A pen of the Charbray cross steers reached a top of 428c/kg to weigh 311kg to average $1332/kg.
A further pen made 390c/kg weighing 372kg fetching $1,451/hd.

Freeman Pastoral Company, Meeleebee Downs, Hereford,Santa,Angus cross steers consigned through TopX.
Equalling impressing in the steer job today was a large line of Hereford, Santa and Angus cross steers from Freeman Pastoral Company.
Based out at Wallumbilla, ‘Meeleebee Downs’, the mixed line of 256 steers averaged 369c/kg to weigh 379kg for an average return of $1,397/hd.
A pen of Hereford steers made 364c/kg weighing 531kg fetching $1,934/hd.
Two pens of Santa Gertrudis cross steers sold for a straight 446c/kg weighing 310kg for a return of $1,382/hd.
The line was consigned through Top X Roma.
NLRS Commentary:
With roads becoming more accessible cattle numbers at Roma almost quadrupled where Agents yarded 8,433 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present and competing on special lines. The market stronger for the quality pens of weaner steers and heifers. Cows could not maintain the levels of last sale.
Yearling steers under 200kg topped 468c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 300c to 492c/kg for the better lines. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg topped 482c to average 436c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg could not maintain the levels of last sale and made to 448c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg topped 410c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers over 480kg made from 324c to 384c/kg to feed.
Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 300c to 392c/kg for the special lines. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg sold from 300c to 372c to average 328c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg sold firm to make 364c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg made 350c to restockers and 360c/kg to feed.
Grown steers 400 to 500kg sold from 310c to 390c/kg to feed. Grown steers 500 to 600kg made to 386c to average 358c/kg. Bullocks over 600kg topped 360c/kg slightly less than last sale. Another yarding of western bred and local cows. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg made from 210c.to 273c/kg. The 3 score cows over 520kg sold from 240c to 300c/kg. Bulls over 600kg made to 318c/kg

A total of 8,433 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.
Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 468c/kg and averaged 441c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 494c/kg and averaged 433c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 482c/kg and averaged 430c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 448c/kg and averaged 379c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 410c/kg and averaged 365c/kg.
