Episode 38: Chris Howie and Matt Dalgleish’s final markets wrap for 2021 – How will the big rain event impact cattle supply and price?

In this week’s episode of The Weekly Grill podcast series, host Kerry Lonergan turns up the heat again on StockCo’s Chris Howie and Thomas Elder Markets’ Matt Dalgleish, as the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator continues to surge to new record highs and torrential rain blankets large parts of eastern Australia.

Have we yet seen the peak in young cattle prices? Will the spring flush cattle turnoff in southern Australia pressure young cattle values? Both Matt and Chris are forecasting a softening trend, but market fundamentals among restockers, lotfeeders and processors jostling for scarce young cattle remain buoyant, to say the least.

The ABS figures are more reliable than MLA figures. We at the ABA have been saying this for years. This red hot market is of course a result of the devastating drought 17 to 19 .I was amazed that the MLA stated that the national cattle herd was at 26 to 27 million in November 2019 when the devastation was obvious to us on the land. We said 20 million cattle left the ABS came out with a figure of 21.1 million in January 2020.
Domestic consumption figures were also drastically overstated by MLA .In 2019 they stated consumption had actually risen to 27kg in realility they had continued to fall and are at 18.5kg .When the National Party formed MLA domestic consumption was at 40kg.
