Rainfall received across Australia over the past week. Click on map to view in larger format.

Rainfall for the past week was recorded in all States and Territories, but largely missed South Australia and the southeast mainland west of the Great Dividing Range.

At the beginning of the week, a surface trough stretched across northern Australia and along the west coast of Western Australia, as well as through the Queensland interior into northern New South Wales. Showers were recorded along the trough line in the first half of the week, with moderate falls in northern and western parts of Western Australia, the northern half of the Northern Territory, western and southeastern Queensland and coastal northeastern New South Wales.
The western extension of the trough moved slowly east, bringing light to moderate rainfall along the south coast of Western Australia in the middle of the week. Several areas of low pressure associated with the surface trough deepened over northern Australia as the eastern branch of the trough migrated inland. Moderate rainfall totals were recorded in a band extending from the Kimberley, through the north of the Northern Territory and from the northwest to southeast of Queensland.

At the end of the week, the surface trough had reformed – extending from southern Western Australia, through central Australia, and into the southeast – while a cold front approached, then passed over, southwestern Western Australia. Thunderstorms and showers continued to bring moderate rainfall totals to much of the Northern Territory and parts of southern Queensland, with moderate rainfall totals also recorded in Tasmania, eastern Victoria and eastern New South Wales. The cold front brought light rainfall to the southern coast of Western Australia.

A broad surface trough extended through central Australia to a low pressure system south of Australia, with thunderstorms and showers bringing moderate totals to much of the Northern Territory and parts of southern Queensland. The complex trough in the south tracked through southeastern Australia, with moderate rainfall totals recorded in Tasmania, eastern Victoria and the southeast and east coast of New South Wales. A cold front crossed southwest Western Australia with light rainfall totals in the southwest and southern Western Australian coasts.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm were recorded across parts of the Top End, eastern Kimberley and Gulf Country, with smaller pockets in northern and southern Queensland, coastal New South Wales and the Kimberley, the northern tip of Queensland, coastal New South Wales and the broader Darwin-Daly district in the Northern Territory. The highest weekly total was 197 mm at Shoal Bay in the Northern Territory.

Rainfall totals between 15 mm and 50 mm were recorded in the western half of Western Australia, the northern half of the Northern Territory and to the west of Alice Springs; in parts of the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula, north tropical coast and across southern Queensland; northern, central and east New South Wales; far eastern Victoria; and western and northeastern Tasmania.

Nearly all of South Australia, much of the southern Northern Territory, remaining parts of Western Australia, western New South Wales and Victoria apart from East Gippsland recorded little or no rainfall for the week.
