Cold fronts produced moderate rainfall in south-east Australia, while snow fell in alpine regions and lower-lying areas of Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania.

Past seven days: At the start of the week, a surface trough moved through inland south-eastern Queensland, and another trough developed near the east coast and extended south to north-eastern Victoria. Moderate rainfall was recorded in south-eastern Queensland, the north-east and south-east of New South Wales, and north-east Victoria. Locally heavier daily falls in excess of 100 mm was recorded in the South Coast District in New South Wales, and East Gippsland District in Victoria. Severe thunderstorms with small to large hail were reported in south-eastern Queensland, including Brisbane, which is a rare occurrence in the month of May.

In the middle of the week, a series of cold fronts moved across south-east Australia, resulted in rain and cold days in the southern and eastern half of Victoria, and western Tasmania. Snow fell in some alpine regions and in lower-lying areas of Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania, and small hail was reported in Melbourne on the 15th.

At the end of the week, a trough moved across the west coast of Western Australia. Isolated thunderstorms developed and produced mainly light falls along the state’s west, with some moderate falls in the far south-west.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm were recorded in the Snowy Mountains and South Coast districts in New South Wales, the East Gippsland District in Victoria, and western Tasmania. The highest weekly rainfall was 143 mm at Bega in New South Wales.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded in the south-eastern portion of Queensland, the north-east and south-east of new South Wales, the southern half and eastern half of Victoria, the western half and inland north-east of Tasmania, far south-eastern South Australia, and the far south-west of Western Australia.
