Rainfall for the week ended 5 October was recorded in the southwest, along the southern coast and in the northwest of Western Australia; in the Top End, central and east of the NT; in the southern and eastern parts of SA; most of Queensland except parts of the north and central western interior; NSW; Victoria and Tasmania.
At the start of the week, a cold front crossed the southwest and produced light to moderate falls to the southwest and southern coasts of Western Australia. The strong cold front and associated rapidly intensifying low pressure system crossed the Great Australian Bight, generating a large cloudband with embedded thunderstorms as it approached the agricultural districts of South Australia. Moderate to heavy falls were recorded in southern and southeast South Australia, western and northern Victoria, also southern and central New South Wales over several days. A surge of westerly airflow generated moderate to heavy falls in western Tasmania, northeastern Victoria and elevated areas of the Snowy Mountains, also in the New South Wales tablelands around the middle of the week as the low moved into Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea.
During the first half of the week, a surface trough extended from the northwest through the Top End to central Queensland, which generated an extensive cloudband including isolated thunderstorms. Moderate falls were recorded in the northern interior, north tropical coast and in central Queensland.
Another cold front moved across southwest Western Australia and the Bight around mid-week, producing moderate falls across the coastal regions. A cloudband from the northwest also brought moderate falls on the Pilbara coast.
Towards the end of the week, a cloudband with embedded thunderstorms extended from northwest Australia through to northwestern New South Wales. This connected with another developing cloudband tracking across southeast Australia associated with a cold front and deep low far to the south of Australia. Moderate falls were produced in northern and eastern parts of the Northern Territory, western Queensland and western New South Wales, with widespread moderate falls in Victoria and Tasmania, and along parts of the southern coast of South Australia.
Rainfall totals between 100 mm and 200 mm were recorded in the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia, western and northeastern Tasmania, elevated areas of the Victorian Alps and across the border in the Snowy Mountains. Isolated falls in excess of 200 mm were reported in the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia and in northwest Tasmania, including the highest weekly total of 281 mm at Mount Read.
Rainfall totals between 50 mm and 100 mm were recorded in an area of the Roper–McArthur district in the Northern Territory, isolated pockets of the northeast coast of Queensland, southeastern New South Wales inland of and on the Great Dividing Range, and along and inland of the ranges from western to northeastern Victoria. Similar totals were reported in Kangaroo Island, the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas, much of southeastern South Australia, and the remainder of Tasmania.
Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded in southwest and southern Western Australia and in the Pilbara; across the Top End and central and eastern parts of the Northern Territory; in southern and eastern South Australia; across most of Victoria except the far east; New South Wales west of the Great Dividing Range; and in most of Queensland except parts of the north and central western interior.
Little or no rainfall was recorded remaining parts of Western Australia; in the west, southwest and south of the Northern Territory; in the northwest and central parts of South Australia; and in the north and central western interior of Queensland.
