TROUGHS and associated upper level systems generated widespread rainfall across much of eastern, central and northern Australia during the week. With heavy to locally intense rainfall in some areas of eastern and northern Australia.

During the week heavy rainfall resulted in Flood Warnings for south-east and central Queensland extending into north-east New South Wales and central, northern and south-east Victoria.

Many sites across central and eastern Victoria had the highest January or annual daily rainfall on record to 9 am on 8th January.

Weekly rainfall totals greater than 100 mm across isolated pockets of central Victoria and New South Wales, south-east coast of Queensland and southern and central pockets of Queensland, north-west Northern Territory and north-west Western Australia.

Weekly rainfall totals between 50 to 100 mm across areas of western Tasmania, central and northern Victoria extending into central and northern New South Wales, parts of southern, north-western and central Queensland, the Top End of the Northern Territory and north-western, south-eastern and the Southern Interior district of Western Australia.

The highest weekly rainfall total was 283.2 mm at Caloundra Airport, Queensland.

The highest daily rainfall during the week was 252.0 mm at Mt Tamborine Fern St, Queensland, in the 24 hours to 9 am on 1 January.
