A new presentation just released by FutureBeef offers some timely insights into managing cattle during dry times, and includes updated findings from the recently completed CashCow project.

In the 27-minute slideshow presentation, Dr Geoffry Fordyce from the University of Queensland discusses the importance of Live Weight Production Ratios (LWPRs) as an indicator of the biological efficiency of a beef production system and as a measure of breeder productivity.

It also includes some early findings from the yet-to-be-released 2014 Northern Beef Situation Analysis.

The research involved more than 5000 northern cattle businesses and identified a very strong relationship between beef business income and Live Weight Production Ratios. While expenses between the most profitable businesses and less profitable businesses were not significantly dissimilar, a key difference was that the more profitable businesses focused on the elements of Live Weight Production Ratios.

The presentation also identifies where the LWPR threshold currently stands for profitability at current market and costs, and includes a number of simple formulas and nutrition snippets arising from the recent CashCow research.
