MLA briefs 18 Apr 2013: Stanthorpe weaner sale

Beef Central 15/04/2013

The annual Stanthorpe weaner sale attracted an excellent quality yarding, with the penning consisting of around 1,850 steers and 450 heifers. There was a very large panel of buyers from south-east Queensland and northern NSW present, with the strong competition on hand able to sustain prices in line with recent results.

Angus steers dominated the yarding, with 200kg to 280kg steers making up the majority of the offerings. A number of steers made to 212¢/kg lwt, or around $540/head, with most of the lines averaging 194¢/kg lwt, or $472/head. A line of black baldy in the same weight range averaged $449/head, while the EU accredited class averaged $511/head. Angus steers in the 280kg to 330kg range made to $625/head, to average 197¢/kg lwt, with the EU accredited lines also averaging 197¢/kg lwt. The over 300kg lines made to 204¢/kg lwt, to average 198¢/kg lwt, with some lines to $766/head.

The heifer portion was also dominated by Angus lines in the 200kg to 280kg range, with the pre-weaned lines attracting a premium, averaging 174¢/kg cwt, but reaching as high as 183¢/kg lwt. The remainder averaged 164¢/kg lwt, or $418/head.
