See video above explaining why M.C. Herd installed the PAL frame.

An innovative automated cattle handling frame that enables drivers to safely unload cattle at M.C. Herd’s Geelong processing plant has won the Livestock & Rural Transporters Association of Victoria (LRTAV)’s safety award.

The inaugural Shane Knight Memorial Award, which recognises organisations or individuals who make a significant improvement to safety for drivers in the livestock and rural transport industry, was awarded at the LRTAV’s annual conference last week.

The award is named in honour of long-serving LRTAV and ALRTA member and proactive industry safety advocate Shane Knight, who sadly passed away in 2016 after a short battle with cancer.

M.C. Herd Pty Ltd installed the Pivoting Access Landing (PAL) frame which eliminates the risk of drivers falling from height and being in a confined space with livestock while unloading cattle.

MC Herd operations manager John Karounos was instrumental in the company’s installation of the PAL frame received the award from LRTAV vice-president John Beer.

M.C. Herd Pty Ltd also received the 2016 WorkSafe Victoria Award for “Best Solution to a Health and Safety Issue”.

LRTAV President Graham Howell said that Mr Knight, together with Mr Beer who was LRTAV president when the frame was being designed, had spent a lot of time working with the frame designer and manufacturer ProWay Livestock Equipment to perfect the design, and said it was very fitting for the first installer of the frame to receive the award.

Mr Howell added that the LRTAV hoped the award would help raise the awareness of how significantly the Pivoting Access Loading Frame can improve safety and hopefully it can become commonplace and best practice at all sites where cattle are unloaded.

Absolutely brilliant, congratulations to Herds for installing it, and to all involved in its design and manufacture. A credit to all involved!
