GRASSFED beef has claimed the major championship at the 2013 Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show branded beef competition, results for which were announced this afternoon.
Wingham Beef Exports’ Manning Valley Naturally MSA grassfed beef, produced out of the Manning Valley on the NSW Central Coast, impressed the judging panel, taking out the grand champion award.
It was the first time in the Brisbane competition’s five year history that grassfed has beaten Wagyu for the top prize.
“With its superb flavour profile and fantastic tender texture, the Manning Valley Naturally beef overshadowed other entries, which were all of a very high quality,” head judge Russell Smith said.
“While the marbling of the Wagyu was very good, the intense flavour of the grass fed got it over the line. Overall the quality in the grassfed class was much improved on 2012.”
This year’s competition experienced significant increases in entries – up 32 percent in beef nominations.
