Brisbane’s steakhouse mecca, the Breakfast Creek Hotel hosted an auction with a difference on Thursday when the grand champion prime beast from the recent Brisbane Royal Show went under the hammer for charity.

The auction was part of a fund-raiser for prostate cancer research organised by the hotel and its beef supply chain partners.

The Brekky Creek often serves 8000-9000 steak meals a week to hungry patrons – probably the largest turnover of any Australian pub-steakhouse venue. The venue is owned partly by Woolworths subsidiary, ALH, which operates 300 pubs across Australia, 240 of which include steak dining venues, promoting the company’s internal Grazier brand.

After a torrid bidding duel with Rockhampton butcher, Peter Boodle, the steer was knocked down to ALH head, Bruce Mathieson Jr.

Judged grand champion prime beast at Brisbane Show back in August, the steer was originally bought for $5000 by Nolan Meats’ and ALH’s portion-cutter, Geoff Atkinson from Beak a La Carte, before being promptly donated back for last week’s charity auction.

Christened Hot Dog, he had a convoluted history, being entered initially in the Ekka’s led steer competition, but was eliminated because he exceeded the maximum liveweight for led steers of 700kg. Walked across the grounds to be re-entered in the prime cattle section, he proceeded to clean-up, being judged grand champion. Since August he has been in the capable hands of legendary steer fitters the Goetsch family at Kalbar.

As part of its support for Royal Brisbane Show’s cattle events, the Brekky Creek also donated proceeds from Thursday's $50-a-head luncheon, featuring beef from August’s Royal Brisbane Show champion heavyweight and junior champion led steers, bought by the hotel during the show’s led steer auction.
