Yarding 4280 Change -890
At Wagga, restockers emerged as the dominant force, making a big impact in a smaller yarding of just 4,280 head. Recent rainfall has invigorated northern restockers, who actively participated across all weights and grades of cattle under 400kg. The competitive atmosphere was intense, with bidding duels lengthy as buyers sought to secure their share of the market, ultimately overshadowing feedlot operators who lifted their sights to target cattle above 400kg. Both domestic and export processors were engaged in the market; however, heavy steers struggled to attract sufficient competition unless they were of a specific breed. Restockers from northern New South Wales and Queensland were particularly active, keen to acquire all breeds of stock.
Steers back to the paddock, weighing between 280-330 kg experienced a notable price surge, gaining 54c/kg to average $1,148 per head. The subsequent weight category, 330-400kg, also saw an uptick, with prices rising by 33c, selling in the range of 322-384c/kg. Lightweight feeder steers fetched prices between 309-358c, reflecting a 13c/kg improvement. Medium-weight feeder steers benefited from increased competition from Queensland buyers, resulting in an 8c increase, averaging 343c/kg. Medium weight feeder heifers sold to stronger demand lifting 24c making from 290c to 317c/kg. Additionally, trade steers and heifers enjoyed a significant boost of 24c, selling between 280c and 350c/kg.
The export market showed some fluctuations, with competition intensifying as the sale unfolded. However, heavy steers faced challenges in attracting buyers, leading to a price decline of 10c, with most selling between 288 and 340c, and a standout steer reaching 360c/kg. Bullock prices varied based on age, with an overall improvement of 6c, averaging 333c/kg. The cow market was particularly strong, bolstered by robust demand from restockers for cows under 520kg. Heavy cows gained 15c, selling between 275c and 298c, while leaner D3 types saw a 16c increase, fetching prices between 244c and 285c/kg.
