Among larger heifer lines offered this week, these 108 Charolais x Brahman backgrounder heifers 307kg at 10-12 months from Clermont, Central Queensland made 339c/kg or $1040.

IN the run through to Christmas, offerings dropped 24 percent to 11,414 head on AuctionsPlus this morning, achieving an 84 percent clearance.

Apart from a handful of baby heifers less than 200kg, all heifer categories softened further in c/kg terms this week, reversing last week’s trend. Steers moved in the opposite direction, with most categories lifting further on top of last week’s rises.

Lighter steers 200-280kg attracted an offering of 1147 head, clearing 91pc, with prices lifting 37c to average 452c/kg. From Morundah, NSW a line of 110 Angus steers 8-9 months averaging 260kg returned $1250/head, or 481c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Leeton, NSW.

Heavier steers 330-400kg averaged 399c, up 1c, with an offering of 2012 head clearing 82pc. Almost 600 heavy feeders +400kg cleared 64pc, with prices 6c the better, averaging 380c/kg

Among heifers, lighter weights saw strongest interest, with heifers 200-280kg averaging 341c, unchanged on last week, clearing all 1470 head offered. Hereford heifers 11-13 months averaging 273kg from Bridgenorth, TAS returned 370c/kg and will travel to a buyer in Glengarry, TAS.

All the medium and heavyweight heifer categories declined in single digits. Heifers 280-330kg lost 7c to average 340c, clearing 84pc of an offering of 1758 head.

Among larger heifer lines offered this week, 186 Angus x Charbray heifers 202kg at 8-14 months from Prairie, North Queensland made 430c/kg. Further south, 108 Charolais x Brahman backgrounder heifers 307kg at 10-12 months from Clermont, Central Queensland made 339c/kg or $1040.

Pretty dismissive article of some key achievements.
    Since when is 105 x 200kg heifers a handful?
2 dozen enquires resulted in $4.70/kg live weight sale.
Selling for 164c/kg above the previous week average and beating all steer categories on a c/kg average.
Sure as hell know that any breeder would want to know that result leading into the middle of Summer.

The reference was not meant to appear dismissive, Tony. But in the context of the next two heifer categories (1470 x heifers 200-280kg, and 1758 x heifers 280-330kg), 193 light heifers offered might be considered a ‘handful.’ And often, in our observation, a small offering like this can distort prices, if there is serious demand for them, as you point out.
