Sharp rises in young cattle values on AuctionsPlus

Three lines of PTIC Angus cows from Bingara, NSW topped the market for joined cows this week, going to a southern QLD buyer for $1840.

 

YOUNG steer weight categories showed sharp rises in price on Auctions Plus this week, after six weeks of drought turnoff-pressured price erosion.

Heifer categories, with the exception of the 300-350kg weightrange, also responded favourably for vendors – in some cases rising 30-40c/kg in value, albeit off a low base.

This week saw 7823 head of cattle listed online, consistent with last week’s numbers, with cattle coming from all states except the Northern Territory.

A clearance of 47pc was achieved, with a total of 461 unique bidders logging in to the sales throughout the week. Again, the majority of listed cattle fell into the weaner and yearling category.

The joined female offering totalled 1163 head, a slight decrease on last week’s numbers. Clearance was limited and an average of $1184 was achieved. Three lines of six-year-old Angus cows, 758kg, PTIC to Angus bulls, from Bingara, NSW topped the market for joined cows, went to a Dalveen (southern QLD) buyer for $1840.

Joined heifers averaged $1160 this week and reached a top price of $1270 for a line of 24-month-old Angus heifers, PTIC to Angus bulls, offered by KG & KJ Lummis, Curban, NSW. They will make their way to Moura in Central QLD.

Cows and calves were in tight supply this week with only 372 offered, with prices ranging from $790 to a high of $1830, averaging $1173. A line of 28 Angus cows, four years old with Angus-sired calves at foot, from Holbrook, NSW fetched the top price, making their way to Wodonga, VIC.

The weekly Weaner & Yearling sale this week saw a total of 5639 head offered, with a clearance of 48pc. Weaner heifers ranged from $435 or 140c/kg to $815 or 262c/kg, averaging $574. Top price was reached by a line of 110 Angus heifers offered by Yammatree Family Trust, Cootamundra, NSW. These heifers, 9-11 months old and averaging 310kg, will be heading to Port Fairy, VIC.

Weaner steers ranged from $475 or 163c/kg to $1000 or 343c/kg, averaging $777. A line of 73 Angus steers offered by RA, JE & AP Ross reached the top price. These steers were 8-10 months old and averaged 291kg. They will be making their way to Lucindale, SA.

Regional sales

This week’s Western Australian sale saw a total of 124 head offered, with mixed sexed calves, heifers and cows in the catalogue. Cows ranged from $1284 to $1344, with the top price going to a line of 6-10 year old Angus slaughter cows, offered by BJ & KA Hulcup & Rockbridge Holdings from Manjimup.

Heifers ranged from $1195 to $1352 with the top price going to a line of Angus heifers 30-36 months weighing 630kg offered by JCC Love Family Trust from Northcliffe,. Mixed sex Angus x Friesian calves aged 4-5 months sold for $624.

Tasmanian producers offered a total of 187 head, with strong clearances and attractive prices. Two lines of Angus cows offered by Brumar Tolisa from Dunorlan sold to $1150, and will have a long trip ahead of them heading to Southbrook in sunny QLD. Unweaned stock ranged from $1010 to $1110, with the top price brought for Hereford steers, 8-9 months averaging 379kg, which will stay locally in TAS.

Weaned stock ranged from $620 to $960, with the top price going to a line of Charolais steers, 9-11 months averaging 295kg, also remaining local in TAS.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weight range:

  • Steers less than 250kg sold from 265c to 355c to average 305c; while heifers sold from 218-342c to average 251c
  • Steers 250-300kg sold from 274-343c to average 314c; while heifers sold from 254-301c to average 277c
  • Steers 300-350kg sold from 299-312c to average 303c; while heifers sold from 163-290c to average 244c
  • Steers +350kg sold from 202-333c to average 318c; while heifers sold from 215-287c to average 254c
