Roma store sale 18 Feb: Price rises attract bigger numbers

Cattle were mostly drawn from the local supply area with some from western Queensland also yarded.

A good panel of buyers including backgrounders was present and operating to strong demand. Steers were present in the greatest numbers, with heifers and cows yarded in equal numbers.

The quality of the yarding was good and prices continued to improve across all steer and heifers categories from the previous week.

Light weight yearling steers under 280kg lifted by 34c to 51c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg improved by 19c to 26c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 280kg gained 17c to 50c, while medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg rose by 13c to 43c/kg. Cows mostly eased with fewer numbers of finished heavy weight cows yarded this week. Light weight yearling steers under 200kg to restockers sold to a top of 448.2c to average 426c/kg. Light weight yearling steers under 280kg to background reached 444.2c to average 432c/kg.

Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to feed reached 420.2c to average 403c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg made to 410.2c to average 398c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to feed or background made to 378c to average 370c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed reached a top of 386.2c to average 373c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed made to 384.2c to average 372c/kg. A good sample of grown heifers under 540kg to processors sold to 328.2c average 313c/kg. Medium weight 3 score cows sold to 286c to average 265c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 282.2c to average 270c/kg, while the smaller number of heavy weight 4 score cows yarded this week reached a top of 295.2c to average 291c/kg. A total of 4,509 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday. Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 448c/kg and averaged 423c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 444c/kg and averaged 424c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 422c/kg and averaged 396c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 410c/kg and averaged 391c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 400c/kg and averaging 354c/kg. Cows and calves hit $1,460/unit.
