Roma Saleyards market report – Tuesday, 3 September 2024

Ray White Rural Roma livestock agents AJ Riley and Jesse McCutcheon with vendors Andrew and Emma Forster, Werna Station, Winton who sold 32 Angus cross weaner heifers to fetch 336c/kg weighing 292kg and returned $981/hd.

Just over 7000 head of cattle went to market at Roma Saleyards with an increase of 1374 on last week’s yarding.

Cattle were drawn largely from local areas with numerous lines trucked east from western regions such as Charleville, Winton, Longreach, Muttaburra, Cunnamulla, Yaraka and Augathella among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Mount Isa.

Agents noted the seasonal flow was behind the increase of western cattle offloaded.

The market was reflective of condition, however quality lines remained firm and sold to an active buyer presence.

The regular processors, lot feeders and backgrounders were present throughout the sale.

Watkins and Company livestock agents Brad Neven and Charlie Gleeson with vendors Ken West and son Jamie of West Farming, sold 102 Angus and Hereford cross steers to average 336c/kg at 595kg and returned an average of $2002/hd.

Based at Loomeah, Roma, agents noted the line was recently finished off on oats.

A pen of their 17 Angus cross steers fetched 336c/kg weighing 604kg and returned $2031/hd.

The line was consigned through Watkins and Company here with livestock agents Brad Neven and Charlie Gleeson.

The Bright family of Karoola Park, Roma also took advantage of the feeder market selling 47 Angus cross steers to average 337c/kg weighing 576kg and returned $1943/hd.

A pen of their 16 Angus cross steers fetched 338c/kg to weigh 603kg and returned $2037/hd.

The line was consigned through PJH Livestock and Property.

The heifer market remained steady with quality lines fetching firm prices.

Heifers in the 280-to-330-kilogram category reached a maximum of 340c/kg to average 292c/kg, with heifers in 330-to-400-kilogram category averaging 286c/kg.

The 400-to-500-kilogram heifers fetched a maximum of 345c/kg to return an average of $1267/hd.

Vendors Andrew and Emma Forster, Werna Station, Winton sold 32 Angus cross weaner heifers to fetch 336c/kg weighing 292kg and returned $981/hd.

The producers also sold mixed weaner steers to average 400c/kg weighing in at 291kg and returned an average of $1164/hd.

TopX Roma livestock agent Billy Swain with vendors Michael and Beth Conway, Lonewood, Taroom who sold 35 Charolais cross heifers to average 324c/kg weighing 363kg and returned $1176/hd.

The producers also sold six Droughtmaster cross cows and calves to return $1820 per unit.

Cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 304c/kg, averaging 239c/kg.

Cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 300c/kg, averaging 274c/kg. Cows over 600 kilograms topped at 315c/kg to average 291c/kg.

Moonya Agriculture, Moonya, Roma sold Angus cross cows to fetch 285c/kg, reaching a top of $1723/hd to average $1514/hd.

NLRS Commentary

Most of the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present however they were selective in their purchasers.

A very mixed quality yarding penned with the market very solid for the quality. Light weight yearling steers under 200kg sold from 248c to 410c/kg for better lines. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg topped at 420c to average 387c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg also sold well and made to 420c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg sold from 326c to 402c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg could not maintain the levels of last sale and sold to 384c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg topped 382c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg with the majority selling from 194c to 310c/kg.

Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg could not maintain the levels of last sale and sold from 200c to 348c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg made to 340c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg also lost ground topping at 340c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg sold from 232c to 345c with over 480kg topping 322c/kg. Grown steers to feed 400 to 500kg sold from 254c to 3874c/kg. Grown steers 500 to 600kg topped 338c with the over 600kg made to 340c/kg to processors. Heavy heifers over 540kg selling from 210c to 328c/kg to processors. Approx another 1,300 quality well conditioned cows offered with the 2 score cows selling from 200c to 266c/kg. The 3 score cows did not reach the highs of last sale topping 315c/kg.

Bulls over 600kg made to 300c with a large number of light bulls to 352c.

A total of 7,273 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 410c/kg and averaged 360c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 420c/kg and averaged 375c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 420c/kg and averaged 388c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 416c/kg and averaged 369c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 386c/kg and averaged 343c/kg.

Lowan Hills Pastoral Co, Lowan Hills, Mitchell sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 420c/kg, reaching a top of $1,745 to average $1,268.  The Santa Gertrudis cross heifers sold to 340c/kg, reaching a top of $1,169 to average $977.

RA & GJ Murphy, Koreelah, Charleville sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 418c/kg, reaching a top of $1,111 to average $930.

7BH Grazing Co Pty Ltd, Borah, Mitchell sold Angus cross steers to 408c/kg, reaching a top of $1,206 to average $1,158.

Dart Pastoral Trust, Springbok, Injune sold Charolais cross steers to 408c/kg, reaching a top of $914 to average $845.  The Charolais cross heifers sold to 342c/kg, reaching a top of $764 to average $677.

AW & E Forster, Werna Station, Winton sold Charolais cross steers to 406c/kg, reaching a top of $1,218 to average $1,163.  The Angus cross heifers sold to 336c/kg, reaching a top of $1,013 to average $938.
