Roma store sale 26 May 2020: Southern demand adds to competition

Yarding 5740 Change –390

Cattle were mostly drawn from the local supply area but included a fair number from Western & North Western Queensland in a yarding where steers and heifers were present in similar numbers.

The overall quality of the yarding was good with lines of quality local young cattle continuing to be well represented.

The buying panel included regular buyers along with Southern restockers, feedlots and processors, however not all regular processors were operating.

Restockers and feedlotters were competing to strong demand on steers and heifers which saw light weight yearling steers under 280kg improve by 20c, while heavy weight yearling steers to feed improved by 8c to 35c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 280kg mostly improved from 7c to 13c/kg.

Medium weight cows eased by 10c, while heavy weight cows eased by 7c to 14c/kg. Light weight yearling steers under 200kg to restockers made to 490.2c to average 473c/kg. A large sample of light weight yearling steers including quality local lines under 280kg to restockers reached a top of 508.2c to average 458c/kg, setting a new top price record for the Roma Saleyards. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 474.2c to average 430c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to restockers made to 428.2c to average 398c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed made to a top of 410c to average 392c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a top of 468.2c to average 437c/kg. A large sample of light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 428.2c to average 395c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to feed or background sold to 400.2c to average 375c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed made to 391.2c to average 366c/kg. The best of the medium weight grown steers sold to 342.2c to average 329c/kg. Grown heifers to processors reached a top of 315.2c to average 297c/kg. Medium weight 3 score cows sold to a top of 294.2c to average 281c, while heavy weight 3 score cows made to a top of 296.2c to average 284c/kg.

The best of the heavy weight bulls made to 280.2c to average 263c/kg.

The limited number of cows and calves yarded reached a top of $1,720/unit

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 490c/kg and averaged 456c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 508c/kg and averaged 443c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 508c/kg and averaged 392c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 420c/kg and averaged 382c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 410c/kg and averaging 367c/kg. Cows and calves hit $1,640/unit.

LD Brown, Gullagimbi, Jackson sold Angus cross steers to 474c/kg, reaching a top of $1,437 to average $1,437.

S & R White Family Trust, Mt Saltbush, Roma sold Charolais cross steers to 474c/kg, reaching a top of $1,412 to average $1,249. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 416c/kg, reaching a top of $1,163 to average $1,019.

AM Abberton, Woodlands, Roma sold Angus cross steers to 470c/kg, reaching a top of $1,164 to average $1,065.

DS & NL Richards, Daymar, Roma sold Santa cross steers to 464c/kg, reaching a top of $1,004 to average $983. The Santa cross heifers sold to 430c/kg, reaching a top of $757 to average $757.

Scott Martyn, Greenridge, Roma sold Simmental cross steers to 456c/kg, reaching a top of $1,487 to average $1,357. The Simmental cross heifers sold to 394c/kg, reaching a top of $1,123 to average $1,058.
