Roma sale 16 Aug 2022: Southern processors maintain presence

Cattle continue to be predominantly drawn from the local supply area, in a mixed quality yarding with limited numbers of large single vendor lines. A good buying panel of mostly restockers was present and operating, including all regular processors however one processor was again absent. Southern processors continue to maintain a presence. Competition was strong on quality lines with prices improving across most categories. Light weight steers improved by 14c to 86c, medium weight steers to restockers were up by 44 to 52c and heavy feeders rose by 13c/kg. Light weight heifers improved by 7c to 88c while medium weight heifers to restockers improved by 36c to 55c/kg. The solid processor panel competed strongly to see good gains on cows with heavy weight cows up by 31c to 34c/kg.

Light weight steers under 200kg made to 702.2c to average 674c/kg while light weight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 692.2c to average 633c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers reached 666.2c to average 604c/kg while medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to restockers made to 604.2c to average 563c/kg.

Heavy weight yearling steers to feed reached a top of 488.2c to average 457c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg made to 540c to average 528 c/kg while light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 618.2c to average 564c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 586.2c to average 536c/kg while medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers reached a top of 526.2c to average 509c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to processors made to 421.2c to average 418c/kg.

The largest sample of grown steers sold to 416.2c to average 402c/kg while the largest sample of the grown heifers made to 420.2c to average 396c/kg. Medium weight prime cows reached a top of 380.2c to average 374 c/kg while heavy weight prime cows made to 394.2c to average 381c/kg. A selection of heavy weight bulls made to 340.2c to average 331c/kg. Cows and calves sold to a top of $2,625/unit.

Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 672c/kg and averaged 604c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 604c/kg and averaged 510c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topping at 482c/kg and averaging 445c/kg.

Peter Williams sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 672c/kg reaching a top of $2,059 to average $1,714.
