Roma store sale 23 March 2021: Demand strong for rain reduced yarding

Cattle numbers fell to 1,937, down by 2,090 head at the Roma Store Sale, after recent widespread rain across the state.

Cattle were drawn from a wide supply area including numbers from South and North West Queensland and the overall quality of the yarding was mixed.

Steers again accounted for half of the yarding. A large buying panel including all regular processors, along with increased numbers of interstate restockers was present and operating as rain held off.

Demand was strong for the limited numbers with improvements across most categories.

Light weight steers under 280kg improved by 38c, while medium weight steers under 330kg improved by 10c to 32c/kg.

Light weight heifers under 280kg improved y 5c to 31c, while medium weight heifers to restockers improved by 24c/kg. Medium and heavy weight cows saw little to no change from the previous week.

The limited numbers of light weight yearling steers under 200kg sold to atop of 626.2c to average 622c/kg.

A good sample of light weight yearling steers under 280kg to background or feed made to 638.2c to average 565c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to feed sold to 538.2c to average 488c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed made to 488.2c to average 446c, while heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed reached a top of 434.2c to average 426c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a top of 618.2c to average 570c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 595.2c to average 535c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 514.2c to average 479c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers over 400kg to feed made to a top of 444.2c to average 444c/kg.

The best of the heavy weight grown steers sold to 372.2c to average 350c/kg. The best of the grown heifers sold to a top of 353.2c to average 345c/kg. Medium weight 3 score cows sold to a top of 297.2c to average 291c, while the heavy weight 4 score cows sold to 305.2c to average 301c/kg. The best of the heavy weight bulls made to 330.2c to average 320c/kg.

Cows and calves reached a top of $2520/unit.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 630c/kg and averaged 590c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 638c/kg and averaged 554c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 538c/kg and averaged 452c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 476c/kg and averaged 404c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 434c/kg and averaging 403c/kg. Cows and calves hit $2,520/unit.

S & L Reiser, Westlynne, Mitchell sold Charolais cross steers to 568c/kg, reaching a top of $1,572 to average $1,536. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 550c/kg, reaching a top of $1,343 to average $1,224.

VM & I Aldridge, Combabula, Yuleba sold Santa cross steers to 514c/kg, reaching a top of $1,677 to average $1,528.

Meryl Kaye Brumpton, St Kilda, Roma sold Santa cross steers to 506c/kg, reaching a top of $1,628 to average $1,628.

Abbieglassie Grazing Company, Abbieglassie, Mitchell sold Cross breed steers to 500c/kg, reaching a top of $1,689 to average $1,351.

Heifers under 220kg topped at 618c/kg and averaged 535c/kg, while heifers in the 220-280kg range topped at 595c/kg and averaged 509c/kg. Heifers in the 280-350kg range topped at 514c/kg, averaging 444c/kg. Heifers in the 350-450kg range topped at 444c/kg, averaging 407c/kg.

PJ & CR Britton, Brighton Downs, Winton sold Santa cross heifers to 572c/kg, reaching a top of $1,449 to average $1,276.

WG Britton, Sandila Stn, Boulia sold Hereford cross heifers to 540c/kg, reaching a top of $1,513 to average $1,452.

Womblebank Cattle Co, Womblebank, Mitchell sold Santa cross heifers to 444c/kg, reaching a top of $1,838 to average $1,783.

Cows in the 300-400kg range reached 310c/kg and averaged 263c/kg, while cows in the 400kg-500kg range reached 302c/kg and averaged 285c/kg. Cows over 500kg topped at 310c/kg, averaging 285c/kg.
