A decreased yarding on last week’s penning did not detract from the quality lines on offer at Roma Saleyards this week.

Just over 6500 head of cattle went to market with prices remaining firm to slightly dearer across categories.

Market sentiments GDL Roma livestock agent Geoff Maslen confirmed.

“The market held up extremely well today,” he said.

“The 100-day feeder steers, although we are coming towards the end of the 100-day shutdown out from Christmas, feeder cattle are still very solid.

“The 400-to-440-kilogram cattle that we can feed a little bit longer are still around the 380 cents mark.

“375c for the secondary types, and 386c for the really good ones.”

Mr Maslen said quality heavier cattle were still fetching favourable prices.

“Heavy cattle, the 480-to-490-kilogram feeder steers, Angus types are returning 408 cents,” he said.

“That represents pretty good value for both sides.”

Cattle were drawn largely from the local Maranoa region with several lines once again trucked east from western regions such as Charleville, Longreach, Quilpie, Barcaldine, Tambo, McKinlay, Blackall and Cunnamulla among others.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Gulargambone, New South Wales.

Mr Maslen said the time of year paired with environmental conditions were driving the western offloads.

“We had big runs of cattle out of Longreach, Mitchell, and those sorts of areas where the country has gone off a bit, but the cattle are exceptional quality,” he said.

“The country is waiting for a shower of rain and the quality has gone out of the feed.

“The market here has held up extremely well, so instead of taking the punt to get them through to value add, producers are happy to take the 1200 or 1300 dollars that they’re making now.”

A punt that paid off for commercial western producers Pat and Sarah Gibson of Gibson Livestock who offloaded a mammoth 976 head of Charolais composite cross steers to average 396c/kg weighing in at 325kg to average $1287/hd.

The number three-year brand cattle were brought in from agistment country at Woodlands, Mitchell.

The Gibson family operate predominately beef breeding and finishing enterprises across their blocks spanning western Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Mr Gibson said their production now largely focused on certified organic practices implemented at their breeder properties Sandringham and Manners Creek and backgrounding block Marmboo, Longreach.

Mr Gibson said the time of year and favourable market prices were the reasons behind today’s offload.

The family sold 15 pens of Charolais cross steers with 13 of those pens selling for a straight 406c/kg. A further two fetched 410c/kg.

A pen of their 32 Charolais cross steers fetched 406c/kg to weigh 384kg and returned $1556/hd.

A further pen of their 30 Charolais cross steers sold for 410c/kg weighing in at 306kg to return $1257/hd.

The line was snapped up by an active buyers’ presence.

The line was consigned through GDL Dalby seen here with Sarah, Peggy, Sadie, Pat and Edie Gibson.

Vendors Lindsay and Helen McKay of Cynthia Downs, St George also took advantage of the feeder market selling 121 Santa Gertrudis steers to average 391c/kg weighing 360kg to return $1409/hd.

A pen of their 30 Santa Gertrudis steers fetched 396c/kg to weigh 364kg and returned $1444/hd.

The line was consigned through Nutrien Ag Solutions Roma seen here with livestock agent Jake Robinson.

Further vendors Jeff and Tricia Agar, Barbara Plains, Wyandra sold 87 Simmental steers to average 398c/kg to weigh 299kg and returned $1190/hd.

A pen of their 41 Simmental weaner steers fetched 422c/kg to weigh 281kg and returned $1186/hd.

The line was consigned through Ray White Rural Roma seen here with livestock agent AJ Riley.

Overall, Mr Maslen said the market held firm.

“Cattle sold today presented really good framing and really good buying,” he said.

“All those cattle sub 320 kilograms, 90 percent of them have a four in front of it.

“The market is just lapping it up.”

Equally impressive in the females was a quality line of Angus heifers presented on behalf of Jeremy and Julie Shaw of JS Grazing.

Based at Double J, Injune the commercial producers offloaded 170 Angus heifers to average $1498/hd.

Mr Shaw said their operation focused on turning off high quality weaners.

“We also send a line of heifers to Roma Saleyards each spring targeting people seeking premium replacement Angus females ready to join,” he said.

“We aim to produce a premium weaner that will perform off grass or grain or be an asset to any breeding program.”

The line was pre-weighed with all heifers preg-tested empty before the sale commenced.

A pen of their 25 Angus heifers fetched a top of $1600/hd with a further three pens reaching $1550/hd.

The line was consigned through Watkins and Co seen here with Julie, Jeremy, Henry and Leo Shaw and livestock agent Brad Neven.

In the heifer selection, Mr Maslen said the market remained solid.

“The good quality heifers that can do the local trade jobs, like the Coles and Woolworths type heifers, British and Euro crosses, remained fully firm,” he said.

“They’re sitting at about 345 cents.

“More weight the better – everyone is looking for weight in that feeder job.

“Those more lightweight cattle there are plenty of people looking to background them.

“Fetching 300c to 340c, and they represent great buying in the fact that you can buy them 10 or 15 cents less than you can sell them for and 250 kilos lighter.”

Mr Maslen said prices were reflective of condition.

“It’s when you get into the mixed quality cattle, there’s a lot less people willing to background those sorts of heifers,” he said.

“If they’re bloomy enough, and can process them into that southern job, they’ll do that.

“Otherwise, you’re coming back to real value adders 240c to 250c for those sorts of cattle.

“Overall, there are still plenty of good runs keeping the market very solid.”
