Roma Saleyards market report – Tuesday, 14 January

The Roma Saleyards heated up today at the first sale for 2025 with prices holding firm on the tail of last year’s market.
Just shy of 5000 cattle were yarded with all regular processors, backgrounders and feedlotters present and actively bidding on a mixed-quality yarding.
The hustle and bustle of the laneways was unmistakable as bidders gathered, ready to make their first purchase of 2025, setting the tone for an exciting start to the year.
Cattle were yarded primarily from the local Maranoa and western regions including, Injune, Wallumbilla, Morven, Quilpie and Roma.
Sellers took advantage of the strong market at Roma Saleyards with cattle sourced from as far north as Aramac, Blackall and Winton.
Vendor Charlie Ferguson of Whitton Cattle Co. sold four pens of Charolais cross heifers for a straight 378c/kg averaging 339kg and returning $1282 per head.
Based at Myrtleville, Injune the commercial producers run a predominantly breeder operation with today’s sale forming part of their annual turnoff.
The top pen of their 23 Charolais cross heifers fetched 378c/kg, weighing 348kg and returning $1319/hd.
The line was consigned through Watkins and Company seen here with livestock agent Brad Neven and vendor Charlie Ferguson.
This week’s sale also featured several lines of quality weaner and feeder steers.
Plainby Pastoral Company, Richmond offloaded a line of 456 Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 454c/kg weighing 318kg and returned an average of $1447/hd.
Noting a dry turn for the Richmond-based pastoral company, the producers took advantage of the favourable conditions and strong market prices at Roma to offload.
A pen of their 28 Santa Gertrudis cross yearling steers made 370c/kg weighing 479kg and returned $1772/hd.
Four pens of Plainby weaner steers sold for a straight 500c/kg in the 200-280kg weight range category.

Hailing from Blackhall, La Plata Grazing sold a quality line of 94 Santa Gertrudis cross and Droughtmaster cross steers to average 428c/kg at 341kg and returned an average of $1464/hd.
A pen of La Plata heavy Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched 408c/kg weighing 406kg to return $1658/hd.

Equally impressive were CR and FJ Mars, Sardine Creek, Injune, who sold 111 mixed weaner steers to reach 496c/kg at 280kg and returned an average of $1390/hd.
Two pens fetched a top of 516c/kg.
A pen of the producers Brangus steers sold for 516c/kg weighing 265kg and returned $1367/hd.
A further pen of their 34 Santa Gertrudis cross steers also sold for 516c/kg weighing 256kg to return an average of $1332/hd.

Roma Agents were able to yard 4,982 head for their first sale for 2025. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present. A mixed quality yarding presented with the market dearer for most descriptions.
Light weight yearling steers under 200kg made from 402c to 514c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg sold from 368c to 518c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg back to the paddock also topping 518c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg made to 450c to feed and 486c/kg to restockers.Yearling steers 400 to 480kg to feed topped 422c/kg.
Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg topped 350c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold from 270c for the plainer types and up to 368c/kg for the better lines. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg made to 378c and averaged 358c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg also topped 378c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg made to 352c to processors and 370c/kg to feed.
Grown steers 400 to 500kg sold to 370c/kg. Grown steers 500 to 600kg sold from 288c to 370c/kg for the better types. A small number of bullocks over 600kg made 340c/kg to processors. Heavy heifers over 540kg selling from 230c to 254c/kg.
Another large yarding of prime cows penned and sold to dearer trend. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg sold from 206c to 278c/kg. The 3 score cows topping 321c and sold from 280c to average 302c/kg. The best of the bulls over 600kg made to 326c/kg. Bulls over 450kg topped 336c/kg.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 520c/kg and averaged 472c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 518c/kg and averaged 464c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 518c/kg and averaged 455c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 486c/kg and averaged 428c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 422c/kg and averaged 392c/kg.
