AFTER breaking weekly records of listed cattle the previous week when numbers soared to more than 13,200 head, there was another solid offering of 11,832 cattle across all commercial sales on AuctionsPlus this week.

Although producers further west mostly missed out, recent rain across eastern portions of Queensland, NSW and into Victoria delivered more certainty for some producers heading into the cooler months. This certainly saw solid prices and a strong clearance rates throughout all Eastern States sales. Recent cooler night have also reminded some producers that first frosts are now drawing closer.

Young cattle and PTIC heifers sold particularly well this week.

Steer and unjoined heifer numbers made up the majority of numbers again this week, with 4461 steers and 3894 unjoined heifers offered.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weight range:

  • Steers less than 250kg sold from 369c to 468c to average 441c/kg; while heifers sold from 314c to 497c, averaging 398c/kg
  • Steers 250-300kg sold from 350-494c, averaging 417c; while heifers sold from 306-394c, averaging 359c
  • Steers 300-350kg sold from 354-410c, averaging 377c; while heifers sold from 316-347c, averaging 328c
  • Steers heavier than 350kg sold from 320-400c, averaging 350c; while heifers sold from 310-375c, averaging 340c.

Breeding cattle highlights

Young PTIC females less than two years old dominated numbers in the pregnancy-tested category, where prices ranged from $1300 to $2230, to average $1749.

The top price was paid for 21-23 month old Hazeldean and Raff blood Angus heifers from Tenterfield, NSW, in calf to Glenmorgan Angus bulls. Two other lots carrying identical descriptions sold for $2220.

Young proven breeders this week made from $1610 to $1940 to average $1,826. Top money went to a line of Glenruben blood Angus females joined to an Angus bull of the same bloodline and were from Woonargama, NSW. PTIC females from five to nine years old made $1,215 to $1,710 to average $1410.

First-calvers topped at $2935 yesterday for this line of 90 Angus heifers plus calves from Boorowa, NSW.

The top price for first-calvers made impressive money this week making $2935. There were three lines totalling close to 90 heifers plus calves from Boorowa, NSW that made from $2925 to $2935. The heifers were unjoined, 18-26 month old Kenny’s Creek blood Angus with Angus calves at foot.

Mixed aged cows and calves ranged from $1560 to $2310 to average $1920. The top price went to a line of Angus cows from Parkes, NSW, with Hollywood blood Angus calves at foot.

Feeder cattle

Among listings likely to appeal to lotfeeders, 156 EU-eligible Santa x Hereford cross feeder steers from  Wandoan, QLD, 456kg at 15-18 months, made 345c/kg or $1575; while Poll Hereford x Shorthorn feeder steers from Texas, Qld, 16-18 months at 367kg sold for 359c/$1320.

Further north at Barcaldine, 194 Angus x Brahman feeder steers, 12-16 months at 383kg made 358c/$1371; and 38 Angus x Brahman backgrounder steers, 10-14 months at 294kg, made 350c or $1030.

At Longreach, 156 Charbray feeder steers, 16-24 months at 408kg made 335-337c or around $1375, while 84 Brahman steers, 16-24 months at 394kg made 320c/$1261.

South of the border, Shorthorn feeder heifers 18-21 months 344kg made 324c or $1115, while from Holbrook, NSW, Angus heifers, 18-19 months at 372kg made 342c/$1275.
