Out of Barraba, NSW northwest slopes, these 87 Angus x Hereford steers 343kg at 16-17 months made 399c/kg or $1370 on Friday
FOLLOWING trends seen in the saleyards channel earlier in the week, there were sizeable price declines in most young cattle categories on AuctionsPlus last week. Breeding female categories were mixed.
Listings rose another 12 percent to 15,049 head, with disappointing clearance rates on most young cattle categories where numbers were significant, ranging from 14pc to 67pc.
Feeder steers and heifers +400kg folllowed a recent downward trend, shedding 23c/kg and 6pc/kg on average, respectively, averaging 380c for steers and 343c for heifers.
AuctionsPlus network general manager Paul Holm said the overall after-auction clearance rate of 43pc was influenced by a low clearance rate on heavy feeder steers as well as SM and PTIC heifers.
“The flow of feeder cattle has started in earnest in Northern Australia, which has caused a low clearance rate as feedlots are now booked out many weeks in advance,” Mr Holm said.
“This would reflect what we see in the physical market where feeder cattle have started to run early, particularly in Queensland.”
“The low clearance was also seen in SM and PTIC heifers, which is often seen as a bellwether in the market of confidence.”
Mr Holm said the market had reset its price expectations after the bulk of weaner sales had concluded, suggesting that a few very warm days through northern Australia always had an affect on the market as well.
Among breeding females, clearances ranged from 14pc to 63pc, with prices mostly down on last week. A large offering of 1422 PTIC heifers produced a clearance of only 25pc, with prices averaging $1667, down $228 on the previous week. Station-mated cows and calves produced an offering of 520 units, up $12/pair to average $2077.
