Finley, NSW identities, Greg McNamara, Elders and Jack Hawkins were well pleased with the sale of the Hawkins family Woolamia Pastoral Angus weaners that averaged about $6/kg across 200 head

A HEIGHTENED demand for feeder stock featured strongly as selling entered the new financial year at NVLX (Wodonga saleyards) on Thursday.

Competing for a penning of 1815 in the monthly Elders and Nutrien-Paull & Scollard series of store cattle markets, a smaller gathering of feeder buyers lifted bid rates by an average of 10 cents a kilogram liveweight on steers and as much as 50-60c/kg on heifers in order to secure numbers.

Elders’ Brett Shea and Oliver Mason said the demand for feeders was a scramble.

“They bid all colours and all breeds”, the auctioneers said. “And, they also bid on all lots including the single sales.

“Yes, they were all keen but there weren’t the numbers to go around and one buyer in Teys Charlton was the standout” they said.

On the restocker front, Mr Shea said although the yarding was reduced in size compared to their month earlier market, the yarding still managed to feature a several of large breeder lines processing quality genetics.

“The inquiry in these instances was stronger than we’ve seen before” Mr Shea said. Most of mid-200kg weight steers were sold beyond $6/kg and up to $6.50/kg, and their heifer sisters to $6/kg” he said.

“It was very rewarding for those breeders who have invested in those superior genetics”.

Nutrien-Paull & Scollard auctioneer Luke Deimel agreed and added that in order to secure numbers and lines of these well-bred steers bids north of $1600/head were required.

That money he said was also required to purchase a larger than normal supply of coloured weaners.

“There was good supply of the breeds other than Angus. Mr Deimal said.  These including Hereford, Charolais-, Limousin- and Santa Gertrudis-crosses and they all sold very well without the usual discounts”.
